Flack studied music education and prepared herself for a career as a classical pianist. At the same time, she played in Washington nightclubs. Her breakthrough in the pop scene came in 1971 when actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood chose the ballad The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face (written by Ewan MacColl), which she had already recorded in 1969, for his feature film Sadistico. The song became a number one hit in the USA in 1972 and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1973. The accompanying album First Take was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2015.

Also a US number one was one of her best-known hits, Killing Me Softly with His Song, a cover version of the song by Lori Lieberman, which was again awarded Record of the Year at the 1974 Grammy Awards. She is still the only female artist to have achieved this. Her third and last number one hit in the USA was Feel Like Makin’ Love. She sang some of her other hits, such as Where Is the Love or The Closer I Get To You, as a duet with Donny Hathaway, with whom she had been friends since her student days. His suicide in January 1979 was very difficult for her. The duets You Are My Heaven and Back Together Again were posthumously in the charts in 1980, with the latter title even reaching the British Top 3. The accompanying album Roberta Flack Featuring Donny Hathaway contains only solo recordings by Flack in addition to these two duets.
