Sun City Girls didn’t actually record and release every sound they made during their quarter-century life as a band. But sometimes it feels like they did. From 1981 to 2007, the dizzyingly prolific trio built a discography so large and varied, it’s doubtful that anyone outside the band owns it all. According to their own website, they generated 50 albums, 23 cassettes, 12 7″s, 12 soundtracks, 25 compilation appearances, six feature-length videos, and a number of other curios and oddities. (Twenty-eight of the releases on their own label, Abduction, have just been issued digitally for the first time.)

Sumari – SUMARI IV (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 01:14:23 minutes | 1,18 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Unseen Rain Records
SUMARI IV is the group’s first studio album featuring the miraculous double-bassist Hilliard Greene. This is also Sumari’s first studio album recorded and mixed after the passing of engineer Jim DeSalvo, who was responsible for documenting their previous work. SUMARI IV’s commanding music, mixing the utmost in simplicity with taut, intricate layers of rhythm, appears here through the virtuosity of the musicians alone, eschewing overdubs and effects heard on Sumari II and III. There are moments when a bell-like rhythm appears and one wonders if is it Hill Greene playing harmonics, the bell of Tom Cabrera’s ride cymbal, Matt Lavelle’s swallowed alto clarinet outcry or Jack DeSalvo’s tintabulistic guitar and banjo pluckings, which is to say the players’ musical consciousness merged during the many moments of coalescence. This an album of ancient dances and future visions.

Sun Ra Arkestra – Living Sky (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 59:25 minutes | 1,15 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Omni Sound
For more than two decades, the disciple that has most visibly carried on Sun Ra Arkestra’s legacy and sound is their musical director, alto saxophonist Marshall Allen, the iconic fire breather and life force that restored the Arkestra’s vitality in the massive vacuum left by Ra and John Gilmore’s death in the ‘90s. Allen turned 98 in 2022 and, as evidenced by Living Sky, his influence and leadership remain undiminished. Marking the Arkestra’s first new recording since their 2021 Grammy-nominated album Swirling, Living Sky was recorded on June 15, 2021 at Rittenhouse SoundWorks in Philadelphia and features a total of nineteen musicians, including a strings section. It was mixed and mastered by three-time Grammy winner Dave Darlington (Eddie Palmieri, Brian Lynch, Wayne Shorter).

One, Requiem pour un oubli, A Requiem to forget, is a biographical overview based on interviews with the composer, whose voice and musical extracts alone form the soundtrack; the second is an audio-visual recording of the Requiem for Peace in concert at the Sorbonne’s Grand Amphitheatre on 30 November, performed by the Sorbonne University Choir and Orchestra (COSU), directed by Nicolas Agullo. These films extend the tributes paid to Henri Tomasi in 2021 for the fiftieth anniversary of his death and the 120th anniversary of his birth. A second international colloquium was also held at the Sorbonne with the help of the IREMUS (program et talks).

In the time-honored spirit of excavating gold from the unlikeliest dark corners, we bring you the shiniest of gems which is guaranteed to thrill lovers of classic Brazilian bossa and MPB.
This self-titled album by Rio’s Grupo Ébano, an all-female gospel vocal group, was originally released on CD only in 1997 on a small independent label and in small quantities. The songs, all originals from the pen of group leader (and backing vocalist to the stars) Gil Miranda, are richly melodic and sophisticated in the mode of all the 60s and 70s Brazilian classics (think Quarteto Em Cy) while their positive spiritual message is more reminiscent of the Clark Sisters if they sang in Portuguese.
This first-time reissue, first-time vinyl & digital edition and debut international release will bring many new fresh ears to this lovely and very classy album which will appeal to different generations of Brazilian music lovers, from tastemaking DJs to their parents to even their grandparents.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © BFD
Fifty years after Don McLean’s seminal release, American Pie, Don headed into the studio to record new original tracks for his upcoming release, American Boys. Don had not thought he would do another original album, but the pandemic hit us all, and he had time to consider and write. American Boys was conceived with the help of Vip Vipperman, Mike Severs, and many musical friends. Much like McLean’s American Pie and its nostalgic shift of music from the ’50s through the ’60s, along with subsequent releases confronting other socio-political flaws within America, American Boys also examines the severedness within the country, its injustices, inequality, and more. True to his artistic nature, Don delivers a thoughtful record.

These days, every artist’s album needs to have a story. The music can’t speak for itself.
But after 22 records, why can’t Ani DiFranco’s work speak for itself? Yes, her forthcoming album is shaped by stories — ones about reproductive freedom, the double-edged sword of the pandemic, identity and ever-evolving belief systems that have shaped each of its 11 songs. It was paramount to the folk-feminist hero that listeners not be saddled with preconceived notions while diving into her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t. “I believe there is a rhyme and a reason as to why these songs have come together in this way now and I want people to experience this album as a journey, a piece of art, without being influenced by a cacophony of surrounding narratives.”

1970s-inspired folk-pop songwriter Suzie Brown has chased her unique muse for a decade, making modern-day roots music that nods to the soul singers, heartland rockers, and blues artists who came before her. Gluing the sound together is the unforced voice and honest, autobiographical songwriting of a Renaissance woman: musician, cardiologist and mother…
