There are few great bands on our planet that you can infallibly identify within the first few bars of one of their songs. Their unique melodic skill, their tasteful instrumentation, the right balance of depth and catchiness, and then of course that charismatic voice: Magnum are Magnum! The same can be said of their latest studio album ‘Here Comes The Rain’, which will be out on Steamhammer/SPV from 12 January 2024 on CD + DVD, double vinyl LP, as a box set and for digital download, proving once again that classic rock music could hardly sound more atmospheric. The band surrounding frontman Bob Catley and guitarist/songwriter Tony Clarkin are also set to release two lead singles on 22 November 2023 and 3 January 2024 and a tour has been scheduled to kick off in early April 2024 (see tour dates). The album’s highly inspired artwork again is designed by the great Rodney Matthews, who has already created a number of Magnum sleeves to support the band’s atmospherically dense music. There can be no doubt about it: ‘Here Comes The Rain’ sees the Magnum line-up consisting of Catley, Clarkin, keyboardist Rick Benton, Dennis Ward and drummer Lee Morris once again succeed in creating an outstanding album.

“Engulfed in the aura of the unisphere,” as the liner notes attest, Johnny Pacheco gave a concert as part of the New York World’s Fair, with vocals by Pete “Conde” Rodriguez. The best songs here – “Se Me Fue,” “Soy del Monte,” and “Goza Negro” – alternate stinging lines from the brass section, a vocal chorus repeating the title, and Rodriguez vamping over the top. The album is a delight to hear and rarely fails despite the similarities between the 12 tracks. It surely doesn’t sound like a live recording, however: The quality is above standard for Fania LPs, and any audience that may have witnessed the performance certainly wasn’t captured anywhere here. Of course, the absence of applause makes absolutely no difference in determining the quality of the album, and Pacheco at the N.Y. World’s Fair is uniformly excellent.

The Armed Man, composed by Sir Karl Jenkins, is one of the most popular classical pieces in the world. Until now there has been only one recording, made over 20 years ago of the full score version which requires a large orchestra. In order to make the work more affordable to choirs and others, there is an ensemble version for fewer players. This new recording is the first to have been made of the alternative, reduced version scored for a smaller orchestra. The excellent arrangement does not lessen the impact of the work; still a big sound with driving rhythms, thundering climaxes, fearful moments and tender, memorable melodies. Hertfordshire Chorus, directed by David Temple MBE, bring huge energy, engagement and emotion to their performance. Kathryn Rudge is the soloist, Jamal Aliyev the cellist and Osama Kiwan the Muezzin, all of whom have performed the work many times with the composer.

David Temple has worked with Sir Karl on many live performances and brings his own interpretation to this moving and thought-provoking work.

On his new solo recording, Trouble In Mind, pianist Elan Mehler presents an extraordinary collection of music full of pathos that could only be caught at that moment in time at a recording studio in New Orleans.

When Casey announced their break-up in 2019, it felt like a premature end. With their two albums “Love Is Not Enough” (2016) and “Where I Go When I Am Sleeping” (2018), the Welsh five-piece had established themselves as one of the most exciting bands on the British alternative scene in just a few years.

Some four years later, the band is now back; not only in front of a sold-out crowd at their first gig, but also with new music in hand. Listening to the new songs, it’s clear that the band needn’t worry about the integrity of their new creative vision or their emotional involvement in it. The new music is quintessential Casey, open hearts dripping with the same kind of pain and trauma that characterized the band from the beginning. Because Casey songs don’t just reflect the feelings that inspire them – they embody them. That hasn’t changed.

With Iechyd Da – “good health” in Welsh as he comes from West Kirby, a small town nestled in the Wirral peninsula between Wales and Liverpool – Bill Ryder-Jones begins 2024 with grace. This fifth record follows the hazy shoegaze of Yawn, released 5 years earlier, and Yawny Yawn, his stripped-back piano version. The ex-guitarist of The Coral embarked on his solo journey in 2008 with a definitive departure from the rock quintet, whose glory had become as overwhelming as its stresses. These difficulties and his own melancholy have formed the basis, throughout his career, of the Englishman’s intimate music of languid, chamber-like folk ballads.

Behzod Abduraimov – Shadows of My Ancestors (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Behzod Abduraimov joins Alpha for several recordings, starting with this ‘kaleidoscope of miniatures’ – miniatures that are in fact fairly gigantic, and showcase the Uzbek pianist’s extreme virtuosity and sensitivity. ‘Each movement is in itself a miniature, and taken together they form a kaleidoscope of human emotions and images of all kinds’, says Behzod Abduraimov. In his view, the pieces in Debussy’s Children’s Corner are not intended for young piano students, but ‘for adults, so that they can immerse themselves in the world of children with a little nostalgia and a lot of humour’. When it comes to Chopin, ‘each prelude has a different musical essence, creates its own atmosphere. Together they form an arc spanning the distance from the first prelude to the last. So I tried to consider them as a whole’. Finally, Mussorgsky evokes in ten highly expressive movements the paintings at an exhibition held in posthumous tribute to his friend Viktor Hartmann. A ‘Promenade’ heard several times suggests Mussorgsky himself strolling through the exhibition. For Behzod Abduraimov, ‘the “Promenades” play a key role in this cycle: they create the atmosphere before each painting’. Under Valery Gergiev’s direction, Behzod has already recorded with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and (during the 2016 BBC Proms) the Munich Philharmonic. Born in 1990, Behzod Abduraimov is one of the most promising pianists of his generation.

Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra & Bernard Haitink – Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 (2024) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

“Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra enjoyed a long and intensive artistic collaboration, which came to an abrupt end with Haitink’s death in October 2021. BR-KLASSIK now presents outstanding and previously unreleased live recordings of concerts from past years. This recording of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony documents concerts given in November 1981 at the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residenz. Haitink first conducted a Munich subscription concert in 1958, and from then on was a regular guest with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra – either at the Herkulessaal of the Residenz or at the Philharmonie im Gasteig. This congenial collaboration lasted more than six decades. The orchestra musicians and singers enjoyed working with him just as much as the BR sound engineers. As an interpreter of the symphonic repertoire, and especially that of the German-Austrian Late Romantic period, Haitink was held in high esteem throughout the world. With him, the symphonies of Anton Bruckner were always in the best of hands. His driving principle was to make the sound architecture of a musical composition, with its complex interweaving, transparently audible; extreme sensitivity of sound was combined with a clearly structured interpretation of the score. The premiere of Bruckner’s Seventh Symphony in 1884 was an immediate success with the public. It was with this powerful work that Bruckner, already in his 60s and long denied fame and recognition, achieved his long-awaited breakthrough. The key work in this late triumph was the Seventh Symphony. Composed between September 1881 and autumn 1883, it paved the way for a wider acceptance of his music. One reason for its success was that Bruckner was chosen by Richard Wagner’s followers to fill the gap left by the Bayreuth master’s death in February 1883. The Seventh Symphony thus bears witness to Bruckner’s veneration of Wagner, manifested both in certain instrumental and melodic similarities to the motivic world of the “”Ring”” and in the explicit dedication of the symphony’s central Adagio movement “”to the memory of the blessed, beloved, immortal Master””. Bruckner’s homage takes the form of a harrowing piece of funeral music – a resounding Wagner epitaph. The symphony, dedicated to Ludwig II of Bavaria, was premiered on December 30, 1884 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Arthur Nikisch.”

I’m usually a prolific songwriter, but this period that I spent during lockdown and pandemic-times – ten months in Havelock North, a year and a half on Waiheke – was anything but prolific. I was a solo mother for much of the stay, and most of my days were spent simply scared and disoriented, figuring out how to navigate normal Kiwi life, and trying to figure out my – and my son’s – place in the world. I spent much of the day, every day, wondering when we would go home. It took a very long time to accept what was happening, and there was almost no time for reflection or music-making.
