“A Florentine Tragedy” (1917) is entirely dedicated to George Bernard Shaw’s famous saying that every opera consists of “a tenor and a soprano wanting to love each other, but being prevented from doing so by a baritone”. Zemlinsky’s play presents this core story in its most condensed form, and the conclusion is one of the most original and enigmatic in the history of opera. The suspenseful, opulent score is in good hands with Marc Albrecht and the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, whose perfection in the late Romantic repertoire was crowned with an Opus Classical Prize in 2021.
