If you ask classical music connoisseurs in this country about music by Turkish composers, the name Fazıl Say is likely to come to mind – but beyond that, there’s no idea! According to the British conductor Howard Griffiths, a lot has happened in the 100 years of the Turkish Republic’s existence: the Ankara Conservatory was founded in 1936 at the suggestion of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; music students were sent to Europe and the USA for training. Starting with the ‘Turkish Five’, the pioneering generation of classical Turkish composers, an independent classical music tradition was able to develop, and a rich and lively musical landscape has emerged in Turkey. Today, there are six opera houses and numerous symphony orchestras in Turkey, and a young generation of performers and composers has emerged whose music powerfully combines classical and traditional Turkish music to create original works.

This ninth installment of the Next Generation Mozart Soloists series presents four young soloists under the direction of Howard Griffiths and reveals the full range of Mozart’s creativity. Mozart most likely heard a Sinfonia concertante – a work in which a group of solo instruments enters into a dialog with the orchestra – for the first time in Paris in 1778. The following year he composed such a work for violin, viola and orchestra: the Sinfonia concertante K. 364. It is recorded here by Johan Dalene and Eivind Ringstad, who are full of praise for the way Mozart placed the viola on an equal footing with the violin.

Mozart composed no less than four horn concertos in Vienna; the first of these is played here by Alexandre Zanetta, who admits to being fascinated by the delicacy, complexity and humor of the work. The pianist Ariel Lanyi describes the two rondos for piano and orchestra K. 382 and K. 386 recorded here as perfect examples of simplicity and variety as well as the passages with a distinctly operatic character.

Rauchenecker, a versatile virtuoso. Although almost completely forgotten today, Georg Wilhelm Rauchenecker was an exceptionally versatile musician of European stature: as founder and conductor of the first professional orchestra of the city of Winterthur (1875), composer, ardent Wagnerian, city organist, music dealer and pedagogue, he left weighty and far-reaching traces in Germany, Switzerland and France.

“Bravo Mozart!” exclaimed Emperor Joseph II as he stood up and tipped his hat at the end of the first performance of Piano Concerto No. 18 KV 456 , played by Mozart himself on 30 September 1784. Less than a year later, the composer pens his iconic 21st concerto, which is performed here by the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg conducted by Howard Griffiths, and pianist Jonathan Fournel. Winner of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2021, the French pianist has already made a Brahms recording for Alpha (ALPHA851). Mendelssohn is a challenge, because his music appears to be so deceptively easy,” says the pianist Claire Huangci, speaking about her new album. Together with violinist Marc Bouchkov she has recorded works by Mendelssohn for violin and piano: the two Violin Sonatas in F – one major, one minor – and the Double Concerto in D minor. They are accompanied in the latter work by the successful conductor Howard Griffiths and the Basel Chamber Orchestra. As Ms Huangci points out, this represents a program rich in contrasts highlighting Mendelssohn’s artistry and the versatility of such a combination of works: “A mix requiring wit and brilliance on the one hand, while also requiring the performers to go beneath the surface and reveal a deeper meaning including sorrow, compassion and nobility, and that is something that is not easy to detect at first glance. The young Felix Mendelssohn has such a feel for the dramatic.

The finest soloists of the young generation have been selected under the artistic direction of Howard Griffiths, a renowned Mozart conductor, who considers that playing his music is like ‘looking in a mirror: you can hear if everything is in place, musicality, intonation, rhythm, phrasing’. For this fifth volume, the American pianist Claire Huangci joins the Mozarteum-Orchester Salzburg and Howard Griffiths, her mentor for the past ten years. For her, she says, these concertos are ‘true musical revelations, works full of virtuosity and imagination’.

The stunning new album from Howard Griffiths and the Munich Chamber Orchestra. Compositions by Franz Danzi, Mozart’s contemporary, acclaimed composer of early classical music. The Cello Concerto in E minor is performed by young French cello virtuoso Aurélien Pascal. The Paris musician, born in 1994, began his musical education at the Paris Conservatory and took masterclasses with János Starker. The second soloist on this album is Armenian pianist Nareh Arghamanyan, who won the famous Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow sensationally at just 19 years old and at the young age of 15, was admitted to the Vienna University of Music as the youngest student. The rarely performed Overture in D major completes this interesting Danzi programme; a well balanced collection of repertoire rarities.

Anton & Paul Bohemian composers Paul Wranitzky (1756-1808) and Anton Wranitzky (1761-1820) were among the most important personalities on the Viennese music scene in around the year 1800. Both Wranitzky enjoyed an excellent reputacion among their more colleagues in Vienna. As a composer, Paul was the most productive and successful of the two half-brothers. He composed in all genres typical of the day -some 50 symphonies, several instrumental concertos and numerous chamber works. Anton Wranitzky’s œuvres is less comprehensive than that of this half-brother and is more concentrated on works for his own instrument, the violin.
