Aaron Neville is an American R&B singer and musician. In January 2013, paying tribute to the songs of his youth, Blue Note Records released Neville’s My True Story, a collection of 12 doo-wop tunes, produced by Don Was and Keith Richards, with backing by musicians such as Benmont Tench and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers.
Musicians on the album include Keith Richards, Greg Leisz (Beck, Sheryl Crow), Benmont Tench (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), George G. Receli (Bob Dylan) and Tony Scherr (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones). Neville hand-selected each track on My True Story, which features tunes by Little Anthony and the Imperials (“Tears On My Pillow”), Hank Ballard and the Midnighters (“Work With Me Annie”) and The Drifters (“Money Honey,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “This Magic Moment”).

I’m using a Marshall 1987X Plexi head through a 1936 2X12 cab with Greenbacks in. The guitars I’m using are a 2009 Gibson Standard Faded Les Paul, a 2013 Gibson Firebird V, and a custom Korina Junior built by a great company in Oxford called TSR Guitars. The best way to describe Aaron Diehl’s trio recording, ‘The Vagabond’, is that it is a quiet masterpiece. The British might call the new album by drummer Aaron Comess, Sculptures, a “curate’s egg.” It’s instrumental music, so as likely to be filed under “jazz” as anywhere else, but the focus is not on linear improvisation over changes or, for that matter, free improvisation either. Rather, it’s a collection of performances running from two to seven minutes based on tight harmonic kernels, with a strong emphasis on texture rather than melody. Comess drummed for the Spin Doctors and Joan Osbourne among other artists, and presumably those mid-nineties gigs left him with a war-chest to finance experimental projects like this.

For his third record, the Finnish keyboard virtuoso Aapo Heinonen has created a refreshingly unique sound, a relaxed whirlwind of fusion-grooves, Latin swing and modal-jazz-melodies – all embedded into stimulatingly complex arrangements. The album still displays Heinonen’s recognisable sensual charm. But it feels a lot more cinematic and ambitious than any of his previous offerings. Heinonen admits he had doubts whether he was ready for these incisive changes. But true to his convictions, he never let that stop him.

This is the first release featuring Aoife with a string quartet. Co-produced by Jeremy Kittel and Aoife, the album was recorded in Brooklyn on the last days of October 2019. The title of the project comes from the Peter Sears poem, “Valentine,” which is the final movement of the 3 song suite along with Sears other poems “Night Fishing” and “The Darkness”. Peter Sears (1937-2017), was named the seventh poet laureate of the state of Oregon in 2014. The suite was penned in 2015 by O’Donovan along with Jeremy Kittel and Teddy Abrams, the conductor of the Louisville Symphony Orchestra and premiered at the Britt Festival in Jacksonville, OR.
