Oh, Weezer. At the beginning of 2021, the eternal college punks apparently finally graduated with “OK Human” and once again presented an album that really – yes, really – sounded fresh. Classic Weezer songwriting, but in a new guise. Accompanied by orchestral instrumentation, it sounded surprisingly grown-up when Rivers Cuomo sang typical Rivers Cuomo stuff like “All my favorite songs are sad and slow”.

In the same year, the Americans left you a bit perplexed with “Van Weezer”: could you still let this pass as a tribute to hard rock and heavy metal or were Cuomo and buddies making fun of 80s rock here? After all, Weezer still sounded more and more like Weezer, even with a little more fuss and one or the other guitar solo. No other band has it so good to disappoint and surprise with such regularity that you have to tremble a little with each release.

In 2022, Weezer want to accompany us all year round with an EP cycle that they have christened “SZNZ”, just like hip, eternally young people shorten their words. The songs of the four EPs are created over the course of the year. Accordingly, the first of the Seazonz, “Spring”, has just been completed and it appears appropriately on the day of the spring solstice. In a strange way, she combines the good sides of Weezer with entertaining cringe. Because they open their seasonal cycle directly with an interpolation of Antonio Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons”. Even if you are sure that this violates any music laws that you just don’t have at hand, it has a certain trashy charm. “Shakespeare makes me happy, so happy,” Cuomo trills over and over again on Vivaldi’s melody in “Opening Night” before the song flips into the usual scrappy sound.
