Gilles Peterson presents a time capsule of musical magic on this compilation. Taken from a day of live sessions in London’s legendary Maida Vale Studios – studio MV4 to be exact, it was originally intended just for Peterson’s BBC radio show broadcast on 20th October 2018. Struck by what a special moment the sessions captured, Peterson has decided to mark the results with a release proper on his Brownswood imprint.

Yet another proof of the creative vigour of the current British jazz scene, this Gilles Peterson Presents: MV4 – Live from BBC Maida Vale highlights its eclecticism. Peterson presents a summary of sessions recorded in the legendary London studios at Maida Vale, at the MV4 studio to be precise. This material was originally intended only to be broadcast on his BBC Radio Show on October 20, 2018. But such was his excitement with the product, this most French of London DJs opted for an official release on his label Brownswood Recordings. This turned out to be a wise decision, as this funky jazz orgy can really spread its wings in this natural and unfiltered context… behind his keyboards, Joe Armon-Jones, boss of this bubbling jam, is setting off sparks with his groove, as he by turns takes the lead or puts himself at the service of others. Saxophonist Nubya Garcia blows a gust of fresh air with perfectly-measured Caribbean accents. The singer Oscar Jerome, also a guitarist with the group Kokoroko, demonstrates his voice’s range, and above all its depth. And Fatima’s sensual sound brings a soulful, classical and heady touch, while Hak Baker’s gangsta-folk brings a welcome breath of light ragga. Finally, the Bristolians of the Ishmael Ensemble led by saxophonist Pete Cunningham give an electro jazz performance that makes Gilles Peterson Presents: MV4 – Live from BBC Maida Vale one of the most accurate snapshots yet of an inspired generation which has still got plenty to give… – Marc Zisman
