With his debut CD, Tobias Haunhorst, a philosopher among pianists, presents a concept album that places three one-movement works in a new, informative context. The young pianist combines Schubert’s famous Wanderer Fantasy and Liszt’s great B minor Sonata with Stefan Heucke’s 2nd Piano Sonata, inspired by both composers and written in 2015. Haunhorst makes it audible that Heucke, in his independent, integrative-tonal tonal language, in addition to the Bach chorale “Nun danket alle Gott”, not only takes up the form, but also the existential and emotional content of the works of Schubert and Liszt and continues them at the height of our time: “My program is about emotional transformation. Each piece is based on a core idea that is actually only a few bars long. But from this one thought, the most diverse characters and facets develop,” notes Haunhorst in the very informative and personal booklet text. And: “For me, musical pieces are actually like people”. In his playing, Tobias Haunhorst works out the “independent personality” of each composition and its existential meaning, the “transformation” that it undergoes, full of tension and makes it possible to experience the “idea that everything is connected” and develops with and apart from each other, both in each individual work and with regard to the pieces of his album “Transformation”.
