The composer of Julietta left seven string quartets that do not, by any means, form a cycle but rather a succession of testimonies stretching from 1920 to 1947. This second volume – the first is on PRAGA 250 205 – juxtaposed the French Quartet (No. 1), a lengthy and luxurious, homage to Debussy and Dvorak, the shortest (No.3) ‘pocket’ Quartet and the Sixth written in the post-war utopia, a fantastic counterpoint of madrigals for strings with astonishing polymelodicism, introduction da camera to last Symphony No. 6 (Symphonic Fantasies, 1951-53), with his earnest, struggling character and high symphonic spirit.

The paths of the soloist can often be lonely, especially for one of the most outstanding instrumental soloists like Felix Klieser. All the greater is the joy when closer artistic and human connections are formed through many years of playing together. Felix Klieser’s concerts with the Prague based Zemlinsky Quartet are therefore his favourite of the year, because after countless performances together, the five have long since bonded more than a purely musical community. “I have played a lot with the Zemlinsky Quartet and we really wanted to record a programme together. ”What could be better suited for this than Mozart and Haydn? With arrangements of Haydn’s horn concertos, Mozart’s horn quintet and four Mozart arias, Felix Klieser and the Zemlinsky Quartet present a varied and rousing programme.

Clarinet player Eddy Vanoosthuyse is joined by the renowned Czech Zemlinsky Quartet exhibiting a refreshing point of view on Mozart’s repertoire for clarinet and string ensemble.

All things Mozart have been said and done, you’d think. Well, nothing could be further from the truth. On a daily basis new findings are added to the research portfolio, not only with regards to the famous Salzburgian’s life hasn’t that been dissected to death? but also about each and every one of his compositions, continuously getting reframed, analysed and compared. The exegesis of the Mozartverse is a full-time job to many. The works on this recording alone raise a bunch of questions of which several remain unanswered.

The Czech Zemlinsky Quartet, which attended master classes by Vaclàv Bernašek (Kocian Quartet), Josef Klusoň (Pražàk) and Walter Levine (LaSalle), proposes the first recording of Dvořák’s youthful works for quartet (1862-74) taking into account the cuts made in the critical edition (Supraphon-Bärenreiter). Consequently, the works are better suited to concert performance and show off to best advantage the spontaneity and richness of their inexhaustible melodic inspiration, ‘apprentice works’ that prefigure the universality of the future ‘American’ Quartet of 1893.

In Metternich’s Vienna, chamber music was the favourite distraction of a number of aristocrats and the leisure class as well as student Bohemia. By 1815, a teenaged Franz Schubert had already written (at least) ten scores for quartet, for the family circle, Hausmusik, without seeking to conceal his models borrowed from Haydn and, especially, Mozart. Natural melodic invention, amazingly elaborate harmonic skill and the spirit of the Lied did not fully assert themselves until the Quartettsatz of 1820, an Allegro assai, suddenly filled with anxiety, followed by 41 bars of an Andante suspended forever, ordinarily passed over in silence. Here, the Zemlinskys repeat the fantastic success that marked their previous performances of Dvorák’s early quartets.
