Yusef Lateef’s incorporation of Asian traditions, modes and instruments into his music has aroused great sympathy among jazz audiences. Perhaps the fascination lay in the seemingly ineradicable human need for mysticism, perhaps in the infinite appeal of the sadness and beauty of minor keys. In any case, there was considerable demand for Lateef’s numerous recordings from the late 1950s and early 1960s, which reflected his fascination with the Oriental. “Eastern Sounds” was indeed one of his biggest sellers. One of jazz’s warmest and most accessible soloists, Lateef has mastered not only conventional reed instruments but many unconventional ones as well. Here he uses only tenor saxophone, flute and oboe, creating mystery and exoticism.

In a Temple Garden is an album by American multi-instrumentalist and composer Yusef Lateef recorded in 1979 and released on the CTI label.

An obscure one for Yusef Lateef – and proof that the reedman was always open to new ideas at every single point in his career! Lateef had already recorded for the CTI label on a few great previous albums – but this album is quite late in his run for the label, and has a slightly different vibe – maybe a bit smooth at points, but also plenty darn soulful too! The overall format is in the vein of a lot of CTI sides from this time – larger group and larger arrangements, handled by Jeremy Wall, with enough space for Yusef to dominate the record with his solos on tenor and flute – blowing openly and soulfully, with a nice straight ahead vibe. The tunes aren’t as exotic as the title might imply, but they do hit some really nice moments that seem to breathe new life into Lateef’s career – and set the stage for a lot of his 80s recordings to come. Titles include “Nayaz”, “Jeremiah”, “Morocco”, “In A Temple Garden”, and “Bismillah”.

Whether his albums appeared under the logo of the forward-looking New Jazz, the contemplative Moodsville, or the parent label, Yusef Lateef never failed to offer a singular blend of jazz verities and cross-cultural initiatives in his years as a Prestige artist. Eastern Sounds, originally presented as a Moodsville disc, satisfied its initial mandate with tender readings of two movie themes and a luxurious “Don’t Blame Me,” while also including hard-swinging tenor sax (“Snafu”), soulful oboe (“Blues for the Orient”), and such iconoclastic colors as the sound of the Chinese globular flute and the Indian rabat (both heard on “The Plum Blossom”). A stellar working band, featuring fellow Detroiter Barry Harris on piano, helps the multi-instrumental pioneer Lateef realize his one-world vision of a music that knows neither stylistic boundaries nor expressive limitations.

Olympia, Paris, 27 June 2012. In this mythical concert hall, the Ahmad Jamal quartet played in telepathic mode to reinvent the Blue Moon repertoire. Then, before giving the audience a transformed rendering of Poinciana, a hit from the Chess era, the pianist brought on stage Yusef Lateef who played with him in the glory days of the Atlantic label. The pioneering world fusion wind player then conjured up some magical moments and took us on one of those mystical journeys to which he has the key. This recording offers the entire historic concert, illuminated by these two jazz greats inspired by groove and the spirit of the sacred.
