At the dawn of the 80’s you could say the Yellowjackets were the kings of the highway. Highway jazz to be precise. The type of Jazz fusion that one would’ve listened to in a Los Angeles traffic jam, wearing an Armani suit, with an oversized shirt, the window down, hair in the wind… Elevator music for their critics. Groovy, virtuoso, pop jazz for their fans. Like a very, very mainstream very, very smooth version of Weather Report… Three long decades later the Californian group have calmed it down a bit and have released some less built-up more acoustic jazz. Pianist and founder Russell Ferrante, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, drummer Will Kennedy and Australian virtuoso bassist Dane Alderson did not push the boundaries into a free and avant-garde style, but despite this the score for Raising Our Voice is an excellent one. The voice of Brazilian singer Luciana Souza on seven of the thirteen tracks also brings some originality to the album. The Yellowjackets stick with a smooth sound but never take the easy route. And just like in the 2016 album Cohearence, even if the melodies are very sensual, the improvisation remains, as always, very interesting.  – Clotilde Maréchal

Yellowjackets: The Paris Concert (2008) 1080p MBluRay x264-LOUNGE

Yellowjackets.The.Paris.Concert.2008.1080p.MBluRay.x264-LOUNGE | 7.65 GB

As anyone who’s ever played music professionally will tell you, it’s difficult, if not well nigh impossible, to keep a group together for any length of time. That makes the Yellowjackets’ achievement something of a singular sensation, as they’re rapidly approaching their 30th anniversary of making music together. That deeply nuanced intuitive communication which only comes from years and years of working with other musicians comes through loudly and clearly on this concert filmed in Paris, with the stellar quartet moving fleetly through a broad range of material that highlights both their post-Bop sensibilities as well as their more lyrical melodic side. The quartet, consisting of Russell Ferrante on keys, Jimmy Haslip on bass, Marcus Baylor on drums and percussion, and the inimitable Bob Mintzer on sax and the Akai EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), proves that jazz-rock fusion doesn’t need to be a mediocre mélange of the worst of both idioms. In fact the Yellowjackets come down firmly on the side of jazz, with just enough driving, propulsive beats to push them ever so slightly into the rock arena.
The Yellowjackets arrived on the scene more or less in 1977, when the original iteration (not yet called Yellowjackets) was formed by guitarist Robben Ford. Ford quickly left to pursue solo opportunities, and the group’s first album under their current name came in 1981. By that time the fusion movement had been in full swing for almost a decade, with such famous purveyors as Chick Corea’s Return to Forever and Weather Report touring extensively and releasing amazingly good selling albums, considering the perhaps niche market this medley of styles appeals to. The Yellowjackets were an interesting assemblage right off the bat for being guitarless (after Ford’s departure, obviously), and for managing to work an unusually diverse musical palette that culled equally from outside soloing to more in the pocket R&B flavored grooves that could almost have come from The Crusaders.

The most adventurous quartet in contemporary jazz has met its visual match in Peter Max, the legendary pop artist who, as it turns out, is a huge fan of the band. Russell Ferrante and company could probably feel at home naming any of their innovative, loose-spirited albums after one of Max’s paintings, but Altered State definitely fits the vibe here — which is all odd meters, emotionally provocative melodic lines, and unexpected harmonies. Max, in turn, took a few preliminary tracks and was inspired to create the cool, splotchy cover art. The hourlong musical affair won’t cause any permanent mental and emotional departures, but there are a lot of odd and spirited surprises along the way. “Suite 15,” featuring the funky interplay of Bob Mintzer’s aggressive sax and Ferrante’s power chording (not to mention one of Ferrante’s classic lush piano solos), is classic Jackets stuff all the way. They almost go “pop” on Mintzer’s multi-genre romp “March Majestic,” which is driven by drummer Marcus Baylor’s New Orleans-styled march beat, Ferrante’s gospel-tinged keys, and — big shock — Mintzer’s ace soloing throughout. The spiritual centerpiece of the disc is “The Hope,” a churchgoing gem featuring Jean Baylor on lead vocals and the Perry Sisters backing. Running from the fellowship hall, the quartet goes alternately fun and jazzy and then weird and wild, from Ferrante’s dark, brooding, and gently exotic “Hunter’s Point” to bassist Jimmy Haslip’s simmering and offbeat “Youth Eternal.” Marcus Baylor has a blast taking listeners into a dense percussive forest at the beginning of “Free Day,” which develops into a fairly straightforward midtempo jazz number. Ferrante explains that this project was about finding some less-traveled roads. But even on those, the band can’t get away from the powerful risk-taking and solid playing that make the Yellowjackets treasures in their chosen genre.
