Chinese classical guitarist Xue Fei Yang makes her major-league recording debut with this EMI disc Romance de Amor. The program consists of the usual classical guitar bonbons mixed in with popular numbers mixed in — the tango “La Cumparsita” and the Beatles’ “Michelle” and Paul Simon’s version of “El Condor Pasa” for example, and a couple of traditional Chinese songs, as well. The program, in and of itself, is not that interesting, but it doesn’t matter. Xue Fei Yang is an incredible guitarist — technically top drawer, warmly expressive in sound, and mind-bogglingly facile in her digital dexterity. Just listen to the attack on Rodrigo’s Zapateado; she is able to vary her touch on the strings with lightning speed and pinpoint accuracy.

Yang is a known quantity to guitarists; John Williams was once so impressed by her playing that he made her a gift of one his own guitars. She has previously recorded for the small, San Francisco-based label GSP, but perhaps this EMI CD will help her gain a wider audience. Romance de Amor also has terrific sound quality, and one might be surprised to learn that EMI in Hong Kong, rather than the usual crew in the Capitol Building in Los Angeles who have engineered Christopher Parkening’s recordings, made this one. Romance de Amor is a quality release; one could hope for literature that is more serious, but Xue Fei Yang is so amazing that she would probably sound good playing “Tubthumping.”

Yang has won numerous prizes in music competitions including the Stotsenberg International Classical Guitar Competition, the San Francisco International Guitar Competition and the Young Concert Artist International competition in the United States, and the Darwin International Guitar Competition in Australia. She was awarded first prize in the Ivor Mairants Guitar Award by the City of London’s Worshipful Company of Musicians, and won the Dorothy Grinstead Prize for a recital at Fairfield Hall, Croydon.

Classical guitarist Xuefei Yang announces the release of Guitar Favourites, her next album by UMG China on the Decca label due for release on 24 November 2022. The album represents Xuefei’s unlikely journey to become the finest Chinese guitarist on the world stage through a collection of much-loved tracks known to classical guitar lovers around the world. Xuefei has put together a personal selection of pieces showcasing her musical journey, including pieces she played as a young girl through to audience favourites she’s performed countless times on stage over the years. The album also features Xuefei’s first composition, Xinjiang Fantasy, a work based on traditional folksongs from the Xinjiang region in north-west China, and the world premiere recording of a piece by guitarist John C. Williams.

Xuefei Yang was born in Beijing, now based in the UK, acclaimed as one of the world’s finest classical guitarists. She’s won numerous prizes in music competitions. Having previously recorded albums of Bach and Britten, on this disc Yang has chosen to explore her own cultural roots, managing to bring different narratives and styles together with great success. This is her debut on Decca label and the album features nineteen pieces ranging from Chinese folk melody to Jazz hits and Spanish guitar to Classics.

Acclaimed Chinese guitarist Xuefei Yangreleases a new double-album -Sketches of China -featuring a unique collection of works ranging from the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD) to the 21st Century, many of which are world premiere recordings. For this album, Xuefei has sought out and arranged poignantly beautiful traditional melodies, commissioned new works from leading Chinese composers and collaborated with colleagues who are the musical superstars in her native land.The first single from the album, A Lovely Rose arranged by Renchang Fu, is available to buy and stream now.
