Music by Johannes Brahms for four hands would be nothing out of the ordinary as a recital programme given by the renowned Silver Garburg piano duo – but a concert featuring piano four hands with orchestra? The versatile Austrian composer and arranger Richard Dünser has arranged Brahms’s Piano Quartet op. 25 and dedicated the resultant work to his friends of many years Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg. This is a very special piece of music with an exciting genesis.

At the heart of Spanish violinist María Dueñas’s DG debut album, ‘Beethoven and Beyond’, is an intriguingly individual interpretation of the Beethoven ‘Violin Concerto’. The work was recorded live at Vienna’s Musikverein with the Wiener Symphoniker and Manfred Honeck, and features Dueñas’s own newly written cadenzas for each movement. The album also includes a series of showpieces for violin and orchestra by Kreisler, Saint-Saëns, Spohr, Wieniawski and Ysaÿe. To complement these works and the concerto, Dueñas has recorded a companion disc of cadenzas written for the first movement of the Beethoven by those same five composers.

As the new exclusive artist of Deutsche Grammophon, the South Korean soprano Hera Hyesang Park presents all her facets vocally on her debut album and convinces both tonally and programmatically. “I am Hera” is an impressive Album that touches on many levels. Perhaps it is the reflection of her own career that accompanied the soprano in the creation of the recordings and that charges her interpretations with great emotional authenticity. Apart from the flawless Intonation, through which each Note unfolds its full radiance, the dynamic and agogic design, which is harmonious down to the last Detail, is also immediately noticeable. Hera Hyesang Park’s middle name means ” blessed / positive energy” – and you can find a lot of that on her Album.

Yakov Kreizberg, Wiener Symphoniker – Bruckner: Symphony No.7 (2005) MCH SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

Yakov Kreizberg, Wiener Symphoniker – Bruckner: Symphony No.7 (2005)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 & DST64 5.0 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Digital Booklet | 3.49 GB
FLAC Image+CUE 2.0 24bit/88.2 kHz | Digital Booklet | 1.08 GB

Of Anton Bruckner’s 11 symphonies, the perennially popular 7th in E major is his most consistently melodious, evenly paced, & lyrically flowing, with comparatively few false starts, awkward pauses, or tedious fanfares. For this exceptional hybrid SACD from PentaTone, Yakov Kreizberg & the Vienna Symphony deliver 1 of the smoothest & roundest performances of the symphony heard in years. Yet it might actually be too polished for the liking of some old-guard Bruckner fans, who may argue that the orchestra is too mellow, luscious, & soft, & that Kreizberg’s inflections & phrases are too nuanced & sensual for the composer’s pure, almost sacred, intentions. But more important than the undeniably rich tonal quality found here is the interpretation, which draws on the style of Wagner’s most ardent music; some of the more ecstatic passages of Lohengrin & Tristan und Isolde may come to mind when one hears this disc. There is no reason why Bruckner’s symphonies must always sound chaste, devotional, or like ponderously orchestrated organ music, for they are secular works by a passionate man who wished especially to be counted in the Wagner camp, & who would have relished hearing such an emotive account as this. It also helps to remember that Wagner’s death inspired the slow movement of this work, & it should be taken as Bruckner’s most heartfelt tribute to the Bayreuth master. Purists may let Kreizberg’s recording pass by unheard, but anyone who wants to hear the symphony played with full-blown emotions & lush, late-Romantic timbres need look no further. The reproduction on this album is especially gorgeous & enjoyable, so in the unlikely event that the performance disappoints, the sound is still 1st-rate & sure to delight audiophiles.

Wiener Symphoniker, Jascha Horenstein – Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 ‘Choral’ (1956/2011) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Horenstein’s Beethoven Nine is that rarest of things – a recording of the symphony which fitted onto a single LP, rather than the more common three sides. This was achieved both by having some quite lengthy sides – the label claims 33 minutes and 32 minutes duration, with a split partway through the third movement – and by Horenstein conducting the work at a fair old lick. I compared it to a later recording by Solti, which runs to a more leisurely 76 and three-quarter minutes. Whilst their 2nd and 4th movements are relatively similar, Horenstein’s first movement is nearly 3 minutes quicker than Solti’s, and his third is almost 33% faster and thus five minutes shorter.

Mathis der Maler is the central composition of Paul Hindemith’s output for music theater. The reception began with its successful premiere of a symphony of three orchestral parts from the opera, in March of 1934 in Berlin. That was still before the composer was attacked in the National-Socialist press which prompted a defense of Furtw”angler’s in a newspaper article titled “The Hindemith Case”. The opera wasn’t premiered until May 1938, in Zurich, where the Hindemith’s had emigrated to, before moving on to the United States. Much as Mathis, who found his political engagement in the Peasant’s War and his calling to paint solely for the glory of God to collide with the expectation to positions himself on religious matters during the Reformation, Hindemith found himself torn between his refusal to propagate for the Nazis, his urge to follow his inner voice, and the demand that he position himself against the regime. These highly acclaimed performances from 2012 at Theater an der Wien with Opera Star Roland Koch in the title role is finally now available here.
