Includes all recordings from the ‘Full House Sessions’ at the Tsubo in Berkeley on June 25, 1962 and two previously unreleased performances.

Wes Montgomery’s incredibly original concept and style continue to have a profound influence on virtually all jazz guitarists of his era and beyond, as well as a host of rock musicians.

Montgomery, known for his unusual technique of plucking the strings with the side of his thumb and his extensive use of octaves, played in Lionel Hampton’s band in the 1948s and 1950s and with brothers Buddy and Monk.

Beginning in 1964, a series of recordings with string orchestra and big band accompaniment became bestsellers, but Wes was rarely recorded in his prime.

He rarely performed in clubs, and it was often said that his club performances exuded more warmth and excitement than his studio work.

This album is the only “live” album he left on his first label, Riverside, and features tenor sax virtuoso Johnny Griffin, with whom Montgomery was Miles Davis’ partner at the time.

A memorable session where Montgomery first joined the celebrated trio of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, who formed Miles Davis’ rhythm section at the time.

New notes by journalist Bill Milkowski.

Originally released as Riverside RLP 407 (mono) and RS 9407 (stereo)

When Wes Montgomery made his first amazing impact on the New York jazz scene at the end of the 1950s, a great many established stars actively sought to record with him. Milt Jackson was one of the few for whom the guitarist felt an equal affinity. For one thing, they shared a strong love for the blues; and Wes had learned, through years of playing with his brother Buddy, to value the vibes/guitar sound. To support this memorable meeting of thoroughly compatible jazz masters, Riverside assembled one of the most cohesive recording rhythm sections of its day: Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, and Philly Joe Jones.

Recorded less than a year after Wes and Wynton’s classic 1965 live album ‘Smokin’ at the Half Note’, which guitarist Pet Metheny calls “the absolute greatest jazz guitar album ever made,” ‘Smokin’ in Seattle’ finds the dynamic duo joined by the solid rhythm section of bassist Ron McClure (Charles Lloyd, Joe Henderson) and legendary drummer Jimmy Cobb.

Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound from the original analog master tapes to vinyl and PCM. The DSD was sourced from the PCM. George listened to all of the different A/D converters he had before he chose which to use, and he felt the George Massenburg GML 20 bit A/D produced the best and most synergistic sound for the project.

A Tremendously Important Historic Jazz Record That Pairs Guitar Virtuoso Wes Montgomery With Miles Davis’ Rhythm Section – Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb

This is timeless music that has inspired innumerable jazz guitarists and aficionados. In fact, jazz guitar great Pat Metheny has said, “I learned to play listening to Wes Montgomery’s Smokin’ At The Half Note.” Metheny additionally said that the solo on “If You Could See Me Now” is his favorite of all time.

This legendary session was recorded at a New York nightclub. It captures Montgomery at the height of his improvisational powers. Many consider it the best performance on record by one of the most inventive guitarists in jazz history.

Highlights include the Miles Davis opener, “No Blues” and the following track, Tadd Dameron’s “If You Could See Me Now.” And the album’s versions of “Unit 7” and “Four On Six” have helped to establish these songs as jazz standards.

Recorded: June 6, 7, 8 and 26, 1967 at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey

By the time Wes Montgomery recorded this album (his debut for A&M), he was a major name in the pop world. Montgomery’s melodic renditions of current pop hits caught on and were played regularly on Top 40 radio. In most cases the guitarist did little more than play the melody, using his distinctive octaves, and it was enough to make him saleable. Of his three A&M recordings, A Day in the Life (the first one) was by far the best and, although the jazz content is almost nil, the results are pleasing as background music. “Windy” was a bit of a hit; the other selections (which find Montgomery backed by muzaky strings arranged by Don Sebesky) include “Watch What Happens,” “California Nights,” “Eleanor Rigby” and the title cut. –Scott Yanow

Wes Montgomery became a commercial success to the chagrin of jazz purists who equate that with “selling out.” Dan Morgenstern, in his review of Montgomery’s 1968 album Down Here on the Ground reprinted in Living with Jazz: A Reader, takes issue with the critics, lauding the guitarist’s individual musical personality. “You can’t manufacture that, but you sure can market it, and one of jazz’s most harmful myths is that if you do market it, and it sells, some mysterious essential change takes place: art is tainted by success.” Regardless of his success, Montgomery has remained a giant of modern guitar.
