Wayne Horvitz’s newest regular ensemble was formed in spring 2012, and toured to New York for his May 2013 residency at The Stone – this is their first record. The RRCME started off as a fairly loose collective of Wayne’s favorite Seattle improvisers playing his music at Seattle’s Royal Room, the club he co-owns and books. As Wayne relates, “All the music was originally for smaller groups and then expanded. Actually RRCME is in many ways like Zony Mash. Both bands were originally set up as weekly, local gigs at the same venue as a way for me to a) explore something that was new to me and b) play some music on an ‘off night’. And in both cases, over time, they became significant projects.”

In the spring of 2015 Wayne Horvitz, with longtime Seattle collaborators Eric Eagle and Geoff Harper, spent a most of a week in residence at SnowGhost Studios in Whitefish, Montana. SnowGhost is a state-of-the-art 21st century studio with great acoustic spaces, and a meticulously maintained Steinway B grand piano. Owner Brett Allen, who has a keen interest in experimental music, engineered the sessions. In exchange, at the end of the residency the trio gave an intimate private concert for Allen’s invitedguests, a group of audiophile engineers and developers.

Composer, keyboardist, producer Wayne Horvitz’s new project celebrates American poet Richard Hugo (1923-1982), and is performed by a hugely talented septet combining his working ensembles Sweeter Than the Day and Gravitas Quartet. Hugo, a Seattle native, spent years rambling throughout the Northwest; that and his love of music (jazz in particular) inspired Horvitz’s interpretations of 11 Hugo poems, which are included in the booklet along with beautiful photos of places Hugo wrote about. Horvitz’s instrumental songs, which reflect Hugo’s love of nature as well as his frequent bouts of depression and loneliness, combine elements of the blues, jazz, folk and contemporary classical and feature deeply felt improvisations by the whole band. Audiophile production enhances the impact.

When Wayne Horvitz decided to record a new piano record, his first leading his own group in 15 years, he took his time until he found the combination of players that was just right. The wait was worth it: thanks to a great piano and studio, 11 of his distinctive tunes and the members of his organ-based group Zony Mash playing unplugged, the music on this 2002 release shines. Foregrounding melody and harmony through the gentle voicings of the piano/guitar front line, concise solos and thoughtful group interplay, the program sets a leisurely pace while evoking a range of styles and feelings. Impressionistic ballads blend with mid-tempo songs steeped in the history of jazz, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, funk, blues, gospel and the avant-garde. A chamber jazz homage to musical roots, Forever is an open-hearted yet serenely beautiful record.
