Born in London in 1886, violinist/violist Rebecca Clarke was also a composer who produced a significant number of works; her songs and chamber music were particularly notable. Although her output became neglected after the Second World War, it experienced a renaissance in the 1970s. The performances on this album take the listener on a journey through the eloquence and profundity of Rebecca Clarke’s creative world. This is OehmsClassics’ second album featuring Judith Ingolfsson (violin, viola) and Vladimir Stoupel (piano), furthering the label’s commitment to presenting musical discoveries.

The accomplished Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel is dedicated to the performance of rarities by the exiled composers Karol Rathaus, Heinz Tiessen and Paul Arma. Their works, written between 1925 and 1949, reflect the Zeitgeist of Expressionism and the incidents of World War II. The sonatas by Tiessen and Arma are recorded here for the first time. Engaging and imaginative programming is a hallmark of the Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel. Individually, Judith Ingolfsson and Vladimir Stoupel are seasoned soloists who have won acclaim for their performances across the globe. Together they create connections, tell untold stories, and take audiences on a journey to the heart of chamber music. Their performance of the Sonata for violin and piano by Paul Arma at the Konzerthaus Berlin was hailed as the “sensation of the evening” by Deutschlandfunk “there was an intensity in the performance that no one in the audience could escape”.

Both accomplished soloists with impressive international careers, violinist Judith Ingolfsson and pianist Vladimir Stoupel began their successful collaboration in 2006. The duo devotes themselves to the discovery and performance of uncommon repertoire. The music of French composer Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) is marked by lyrical lines and flowing harmonies. His elegant music is transparent and virtuosic. These two pieces were written more than four decades apart, and show turning points in the composers artistic life. The first sonata was the composers breakthrough hit. The success of this work unleashed an interest in his pieces across France. The second sonata is the first piece from the composers final period, when he wrote primarily chamber music.

Born in Tarnopol in former Austria-Hungary (now Ukraine) in 1906, Karol Rathaus’ career was brought to a halt by the First World War, just like those of many other young artists from that dark period. In the 1920s, Rathaus began what would be a sensational career as a composer. He was considered at the time as one of the greatest hopefuls of new music in Berlin. But all of that changed with the onset of Nazism, which forced Rathaus to emigrate to the United States where he became a professor and a composer of film music whilst also working on other forms of music.

The Unknown Russia: “For me it has been a great joy to conceive and record the programme featured on this album. The idea that inspired it was twofold: on the one hand, it is made up of variation cycles (with the exception of the Rondo brillante on a theme from Bellini’s opera ‘I Capuletti ed i Montecchi’). On the other hand, the programme’s chronological order not only traces the fascinating evolution of Glinka’s composition technique, but also the manner in which his successors used what he had invented: the “Glinka-type variation” where the theme and/or structure are usually not modified, but the accompaniment is subjected to a great variety of transformations. Glinka was held in high regard as the “father of Russian music”. Many Russian composers made his variation technique their own and developed it further – for example, Tchaikovsky in the Finale of his 4th Symphony. I therefore decided to include two further works that refer to Glinka: the Paraphrase on Glinka’s Song ‘The Lark’ by Mily Balakirev (1837-1910), and Variations on a Theme by Glinka by Anatoly Lyadov (1855-1914)………” (From the Booklet notes by Vladimir Stoupel)
