Gramophone and BBC Award-winner Patricia Kopatchinskaja records exclusively for Naïve. Releases to date have included Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Philippe Herreweghe, a CD entitled „Rapsodia“ which explores the roots of George Enescu’s music with examples of Moldovan and Romanian folk music. Her most recent release was an all-Hungarian disc featuring concertos by Bartók, Ligeti and Eötvös which has won the concerto category in the Gramophone Awards 2013.

The two violin concertos coupled on this recording display as many affinities as they do divergences. Both stem from creators in conflict with their native Russia – one choosing to return there, the other settling permanently in exile; both belong to the aesthetic of the ‘return to order’ observed from 1920 onwards and characterised by the reappropriation of models from the past. If Prokofiev preserves the traditional bases of the concerto, he combines them with a search for a new lyricism. As for Stravinsky, he reworks tried and trusted models while offering a deliberately neutral, distanced expressivity.

Vladimir Jurowski and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin continue their exploration of Mahler with a new recording of Das Lied von der Erde, on which Dame Sarah Connolly and Robert Dean Smith provide the vocal contributions. Residing somewhere between symphony and song cycle, Das Lied is one of Mahler’s most profound and loved works, marking an important step in the composer’s career, as well as in his private life. Jurowski approaches the piece as Mahler’s deliberate move from a “heroic” Beethovenian model towards a more “lyrical”, Schubertian attitude. Throughout Das Lied, and particularly in the contemplative last movement, “Der Abschied (The Goodbye)”, Mahler seems to come to terms with the mortality of man while celebrating the immortal nature of Life.

These early symphonies, conducted by Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski, showcase youthful Tchaikovsky at his best. The Second, ‘Little Russian’, is full of bright, dancing Ukranian folk melodies which build to a joyous final celebration bursting with life. The Third Symphony, nicknamed for its finale in the style of a ‘polonaise’, takes German and Polish musical styles and transforms them into a truly Russian symphony; one that hints at Tchaikovsky’s later balletic works.

No worldly commotion is heard in Heaven! All live in gentlest peace’. Such is the child-like innocence which permeates Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, and yet beneath the surface there is more than meets the eye: an undercurrent of mysticism; a momentary glimpse behind the curtain at something timeless and unsettling. Star Russian soprano Sofia Fomina joins the London Philharmonic Orchestra and its Principal Conductor Vladimir Jurowski in this performance of Mahler’s beguiling Symphony, recorded live at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

‘This music is absolutely ideally placed to Jurowski’s strengths: his precision and ability to inspire playing of the greatest delicacy, pointing, accuracy and warmth is exactly what’s called for in this score’ Bachtrack.com, September 2012. This release marks the 29th on the LPO label conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, and is the first Jurowski-conducted Richard Strauss release to date. The performances of the three works on this release were also critically well received, with the soloists within the Orchestra noted for their ‘poise’ and ‘exquisite handling’ of Die Frau ohne Schatten and Jurowski’s ‘perfect blending of rich textures’ in Eine Alpensinfonie (The Arts Desk). Vladimir Jurowski has a strong affinity with Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow), and chose to conduct a selection of orchestral highlights from the opera rather than the composer’s own published Fantasie. He went on to conduct the complete opera at the Metropolitan Opera in 2013. ‘If the evening can boast a hero, the honour must go to Vladimir Jurowski, who conducts with abiding passion, sensitivity and propulsion.’ (The Financial Times). The Dance of the Seven Veils was performed as part of the opening concert of the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s critically acclaimed The Rest is Noise festival of music which shaped the twentieth century. ‘Jurowski and the LPO set the scene with an outstandingly delicate performance of the Dance of the Seven Veils’ (The Financial Times). These discs join the previously released recordings of Richard Strauss’s Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben, conducted by Bernard Haitink (LPO-0079); performances which were highly praised at the time. Gramophone magazine said ‘[it] gives any account in the catalogue a run for its money in terms of sheer élan, and bristles with energy’.

Mozart was a master at capturing the spirits of the instruments for which he wrote, perfectly exemplified here in the lighter-than-air Flute Concerto No. 2, the sprightly and playful Bassoon Concerto and in the interplay of the four soloists in the Sinfonia concertante. These three exceptional works come to life in this studio recording with soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski.

Martynov skillfully combines influences from American minimalism and Russian Orthodox chant with a libretto inspired by the ancient text of the Tao Te Ching to create a sound world which seeks to reimagine the concept of utopia. This world premiere recording was made at London’s Abbey Road Studios, under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.
