In 1918, when Austria changed from the Austrian-Hungarian empire to the Austrian Republic, the “Court Opera” became the Vienna State Opera, with the musicians in the orchestra and the singers in the chorus members of Austrian public services. Beside their official duties, the members of the orchestra constitute a private society, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, founded in 1842 by members of the orchestra of the “Court Opera”, to provide an outstanding concert orchestra for Vienna.

Instead of Leonard Bernstein, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra was fronted this time by Vladimir Golschmann. Born in Paris to Russian émigrés in 1893 and head of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra from 1931, Golschmann was one of the few conductors with whom Gould apparently never had problems, and vice versa. In the Beethoven concerto Gould played his own cadenza – with a noticeable nod to Max Reger…

Ten years after the release of the D-minor Concerto under Leonard Bernstein (see No. 3), Gould now issued Volume 1 of the Bach concertos under Vladimir Golschmann. “I want to tell you how much I enjoyed the recording. Gould’s last phonograph recording with orchestra. After the death of Vladimir Golschmann, on 1 March 1972, he declined to complete his Bach series by recording Concerto No. 6 (BWV 1057) and abandoned his plan to re-record the D-minor Concerto (BWV 1052) in stereo.
