And to add atmosphere to the superb choice of songs, the fact of live performance; it is in fact a live, recorded on the occasion of the three Milanese concerts that the duo held at the Teatro dell’Elfo from 27 February to 1 March 2015.

Caine: “The work consists of small chapters with different themes that express feelings like anger, frustration, but also peace. The work contains allusions to American music history. I take up the question of what holds the United States together. Someone living in NYC has a different background than someone from Oklahoma or Texas. We look at and judge each other in completely different ways. For me, the music is the only connecting element. “Present Joys” is a studio album by trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Uri Caine which was released in July 2014 on the Greenleaf Music label. The album follows Douglas’ 2012 exploration of hymns, Be Still, by including four songs from the Sacred Harp songbook. Writing for The Guardian, John Fordham called it “a 2014 jazz highlight”. PopMatters’ Will Layman stated “Dave Douglas and Uri Caine are good enough to stand up to making “pretty” music, even traditional music. They pass the test and come out still surprising us”.

In the fall of 2017 Philadelphia unveiled a statue of Octavius Catto in front of City Hall. Catto was a 19th Century African-American freedom fighter known for his work as an abolitionist, educator, pioneering baseball player, and civil and voting rights advocate. Uri Caine’s The Passion of Octavius Catto, written for orchestra, choral ensemble, gospel vocalist and jazz trio was commissioned by the Mann Music Center and the Pew Center for the Arts. His ten part composition documents Catto’s life-long activism which was cut short by his murder during the 1871 Election Day violence perpetrated against African-American Philadelphians as they attempted to exercise their right to vote — won two years earlier with the passage of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution.
