“I don’t want to betray that constantly sounding tone in me, through which I hear the world around,” acknowledged Sergei Rachmaninov. This tone stimulated by the intonations of folk melodies and bell ringing, and the imagery of the Russian landscape, permeates his Second Symphony. It became a landmark work for the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, whose performances in the leading concert venues of Europe and Asia were widely admired. Dmitry Liss, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Orchestra has created a musical collective of remarkable quality during his 25-year tenure. A life-long personal favourite of Liss, Rachmaninov is frequently included in the Orchestra’s programmes, both in Russia and abroad. “For me, his music is as much a symbol of the flourishing Russian culture of the Silver Age as works by Bunin and Chekhov”, states Liss. “His music always captivates me with its incredible emotional sincerity expressed in a reserved, noble and aristocratic way. Perhaps it’s this combination which gives his music such extraordinary depth.”

The album was recorded and mixed by the St. Petersburg company ReachSound. Art using proprietary immersive technologies.

Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony is one of conductor Dmitry Liss’ favourite works. It is close to his heart because it encapsulates an ethical standard. Orchestras from countries that have experienced dictature and repression have a special relation to this work. The performers immediately understand what is behind the notation; the mysteries, the magic of ambiguities, the playing with fire. To express oneself so personally is extremely hazardous and Shostakovich does it with sublime skill. Dmitry Liss says he comes closer to the music and admires it more and more each time he conducts it. The Ural Philharmonic Orchestra has performed the work in major venues all over Europe.

In his new Saxophone Concerto, Gabriel Prokofiev explores a side of classical music usually seen as forbidden by modern contemporary composers: melody. This aspect was incorporated at the request of the soloist, Branford Marsalis, allowing Prokofiev to revisit characteristics of the classical tradition not usually heard in contemporary music, giving the saxophone an open canvas.

Prokofiev’s Bass Drum Concerto shows the versatility of the instrument, despite only being used in a very basic fashion in classical music as a whole. Prokofiev experiments with how the bass drum is struck, where it is struck, and what it is struck with throughout the piece, producing a variety of sounds, colours and textures.

Olga Peretyatko, Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, Dmitry Liss – Russian Light (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

On her new album “Russian Light”, Olga Peretyatko presents favourite arias and songs from her homeland Russia — by Glinka, Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov, Stravinsky and Shostakovich. Many of them are well known (Rachmaninov’s Vocalise) but there are also unknown rare jewels on the album like the songs from Rachmaninov or the opera arias by Shostakovich. She teamed with the Ural Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in Russia, and excellent for this kind of repertoire with conductor Dimitry Liss, specialist for this repertoire.

The main focus of “Russian Light” falls on excerpts from operas that have left a deep imprint on Russia’s national music. Among these are Glinka’s Ruslan and Ludmila as well as Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Golden Cockerel, The Snow Maiden and The Tsar’s Bride. The latter piece represents a personal triumph for Ms Peretyatko, for she sang the role of Marfa under Daniel Barenboim to open the 2013 season at the Berlin State Opera. With her silvery timbre and solid mastery of coloratura she thrilled not only the audience but the critic of Der Tagespiegel: “Olga Peretyatko projects Marfa as a being so delicate and other-worldly that it strikes the knowledgeable listener to the core.”

Other excerpts on “Russian Light” are taken from operas by Stravinsky and Shostakovich that likewise accompanied Ms Peretyatko on her rise to stardom. In 2009 she stepped in at short notice for an indisposed colleague to sing the role of Lidochka in Shostakovich’s operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki at the Opra de Lyon. Though she had only two days’ time before the premire, she won acclaim for her breathtaking character depiction. In 2010 she sang The Nightingale in Stravinsky’s like-named opera (Le Rossignol) at the festival in Aix-en-Provence. When the production was mounted in New York and Canada the North American critics went wild about her effortless presentation and the “fresh sound of her voice”.
