Underworld: Dubnobasswithmyheadman (1994) (20th anniversary re-issue 2014) [High Fidelity Pure Audio Blu-Ray Disc]

Title: Underworld: Dubnobasswithmyheadman
Released: 1994
Genre: Electronica, Techno, Progressive House, Progressive Trance, Leftfield, Ambient
Artist: Karl Hyde (vocals, guitars), Rick Smith (keyboards and mixing, vocals), Darren Emerson (keyboards and mixing)
Issued: United Kingdom | UMC
Duration: 01:12:53

dubnobasswithmyheadman is the third album by Underworld, released in the UK on Junior Boy’s Own on 24 January 1994. It was the first Underworld album after the 1980s version of the band had made the transition from synthpop to techno and progressive house and is also the first album to feature Darren Emerson as a band member, ushering in the “MK2” phase of the band, which continued until Emerson’s departure in 2001.
In 2014, the album was reissued on vinyl, Blu-Ray, and 2-CD and 5-CD expanded editions. Reviewing the reissue, Q described the album as “superb” and proposed that Hyde and Smith’s previous 14 years of making music “was why the uncannily undated dubnobasswithmyheadman still exudes such multidimensional sophistication”. Uncut praised the material on the extra four discs, but felt that the original album was still Underworld’s key record, claiming that Hyde’s lyrical vision was able to make Romford sound as exotic as the USA he had seen on his travels, and that this was the reason why “twenty years later, the results of that crazy belief still sound like dance music’s dirtiest epic”.

Underworld and Iggy Pop announce Teatime Dub Encounters due for release on July 27th via Caroline. The 4 track EP is the result of a few clandestine hotel room recording sessions that began a few weeks after Underworld and Iggy Pop each released their last albums on the same day (3/18/16). It is neither historical nor a tribute to past work; it is the work of artists in motion, engaged in a process that they both bring to all of their work – one that uses spontaneity as a spur for creativity.

What is ‘DRIFT’? It’s precisely one year inside the minds of Underworld. It’s a journey that began on 1st November 2018 when the group released the track ‘Another Silent Way’ and set off with no map, no fixed destination and a simple mantra (‘Drift is the opposite of ‘normal’ or ‘usual’ practice; we’ll do this until we’re dust.’) ‘Rick Smith and Karl Hyde’s aim was to create and publish music and film episodically for 52 weeks and see where the journey took them. Within a few weeks, the experiment found its own path, prompting the electronic pioneers to react to previous releases and create new works accordingly. Over time, the duo’s innate curiosity opened up a unique space in which they could experiment, learn and explore new frontiers – together and with others (including Tomato’s Simon Taylor, Australian improv-trance band The Necks, techno producer Ø [Phase], Japanese noise band Melt-Banana, economics writer Aditya Chakrabortty and members of Black Country, New Road). During the 52 weeks, five self-contained episodes were released (respectively in November, January, March, May and August) – collectively, they formed ‘DRIFT Series 1’. The ‘DRIFT Series 1’ box set comprises 7 CDs, 1 Blu-ray, and an 80 page exclusive book documenting the entire ‘DRIFT’ journey from start to finish in interviews with Rick Smith, Karl Hyde and Tomato’s Simon Taylor along with pictures, poems, commentary and lyrics.

A mesmerizing drift into springtime; a journey across miles of open sands into tight city streets where neon blurs past the windscreen as night turns to day, this HEART beats to the sound of gorgeous hyperspace soul, metropolitan electro, scratched up ghostly radio transmissions and rumbling ultra heavy percussive techno.

DRIFT started as a journey with no fixed destination; an experiment and a very public investigation of new working processes by Underworld. On that journey, Karl and Rick stopped at a pig shed in Essex; Rockingham Speedway; a hotel room in Reykjavik; AIR studios and a series of tiny club shows in Amsterdam, Manchester and London. Each of those stop off points helped influence the creation of DRIFT Episode 1 parts 1 to 5…

Underworld’s unique brand of quirky electronica brought them to the fore in 1996 with their single ‘Born Slippy.NUXX’ appearing in the soundtrack of Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting. Their follow-up album “Beaucoup Fish” was their most highly anticipated release to date, a groove-heavy, genre-bending release that moves from techno anthems Cups and Sudder/King Of Snake to house-infused gems like Push Upstairs and Bruce Lee. The album was remastered and re-released on 25 August 2017 with deluxe and super-deluxe expanded editions. This super deluxe edition includes a selection of rare and unreleased material from the extensive session and edits leading up to the release of the record in 1999.

While Underworld’s Karl Hyde and Rick Smith have retained what was special about their greatest triumphs – Dubnobasswithmyheadman and Second Toughest in the Infants were two of the most revered dance albums of the 1990s – Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future is never weighed down by its makers’ history. Karl Hyde’s “found” lyrics (using snippets of overheard conversations) are affecting, fractured evocations of the disorientations of modern urban life. Even the album’s title is a real-life utterance, a phrase Hyde’s father said to his mother shortly before he died. Opening track I Exhale has the sleazy ambience of David Bowie’s Lodger, its “blah, blah, blah” motif echoing the “far, far, far, away” refrain of Red Sails. But that and If Rah aside, Barbara Barbara, We Face a Shining Future is dreamy and unabrasive. Gently menacing instrumental Santiago Cuatro has a Middle Eastern feel, while the smooth synthpop texture of the closing track Nylon Strung reaches a state of bliss. (more…)
