“Tubby Hayes is undoubtedly one of the most important, influential and ground-breaking UK jazz musicians of all time. During the ‘50s and early ‘60s, Hayes had stood apart from many of his UK-based contemporaries, displaying a self-confidence and virtuoso musical delivery that placed him neck-and-neck with many of the leading American jazzmen of the day. He worked with the likes of Quincy Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Charles Mingus and Duke Ellington and his many fans included Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley and Sonny Rollins. He had his own primetime TV show and was the face of UK jazz.

This is a previously unreleased mono recording of Modes and Blues from the Tubby Hayes Quintet’s weekly Ronnie Scott s residency on 8th February 1964. Regarded as one of the masterworks of British modern jazz, Modes and Blues shows the Quintet at the very height of its powers, channelling the new musical flavours and inspiration that Tubby Hayes had absorbed from the cutting edge of jazz and the new directions of John Coltrane. Recorded with Hayes’ approval by Les Tomkins on his Ferrograph tape recorder, this is one of the most engrossing of all his stretch-out epics. Hayes digs in deep with marathon and breathtaking soloing, trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar delivers his characteristically lyrical improvisation, and there’s dynamic interplay and drive from the great Terry Shannon, Freddy Logan and Allan Ganley rhythm section. The Quintet had barely a few months left to run at the time of this performance, splitting in August 1964, fearing its music had atrophied into self-parody. ‘Modes and Blues’ is among its many triumphs, a performance that shows how high the band had set the aspirational bar for British modernism, and, as such, is as much a cultural document as a musical souvenir. Personnel: Tubby Hayes: flute, tenor saxophone; Jimmy Deuchar: trumpet; Terry Shannon: piano; Freddy Logan: double bass; Allan Ganley: drums. Vinyl mastering and cutting by Darrel Sheinman and Caspar Sutton-Jones at Gearbox Records from the original master tapes courtesy of Les Tomkins.

This major release is a previously unavailable live performance from a great Tubby Hayes lineup that never made a commercially available album. Recorded on 5th December 1968 by Ted Lyons at the legendary Hopbine in North Wembley, The Syndicate reveals Hayes’ new quartet that featured the spectacular Dublin born guitarist Louis Stewart and 22 year old drummer Spike Wells, with Kenny Baldock standing in for regular double bassist Ron Mathewson. With detailed sleeve notes by tenor saxophonist and Hayes biographer Simon Spillett, The Syndicate now fills an aching gap in Hayes’ discography and our understanding of his remarkable musical journey.

The Jazz Couriers were a British jazz quintet formed in April 1957 and which disbanded in August 1959.

“Formed in the UK in 1957, the Jazz Couriers were an outstanding hard bop band. They developed a vibrant attacking style that provided a base for fine solo playing by its two co-founders, tenor saxophonists Tubby Hayes (b. Edward Brian Hayes, 30 January 1935, London, England, d. 8 June 1973, London, England) and Ronnie Scott (b. Ronald Schatt, 28 January 1927, London, England, d. 23 December 1996, London, England). The ensemble was enhanced by Hayes alternative instrument, the vibraphone, which created a distinctive sound that effectively distanced the group from that of Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers, to which it owed a passing nod of acknowledgement. The music played, ensemble and solo, was of extraordinarily high quality and, not surprisingly, the Couriers were an influential presence on the UK jazz scene.
