Given the length of his career, the indefatigable Joseph Haydn lived through the multiple upheavals of the musical world between the mid-eighteenth and the early nineteenth centuries, confronting all the problems of a rapidly changing art in order to adapt his activity as a composer to the evolution of his era. Having been deputy then full Kapellmeister to the Esterházy princes since 1761, he was relieved of his duties at the court following the death of Prince Nicholas ‘the Magnificent’ in 1790, after almost thirty years of faithful service, though retaining his title. At the age of nearly seventy, he then set out on an emancipatory trip to England, where his reputation had preceded him. He died in Vienna in 1809, respected throughout Europe. Like his string quartets, Haydn’s keyboard trios occupy a significant place in his catalogue.

To mark its 20th anniversary, the Trio Chausson presents two trios by the most famous siblings in the history of classical music: Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn. For many years, Fanny Mendelssohn (later: Hensel) was probably the younger brother’s closest musical adviser. The siblings often shared their compositional ideas with each other before a note was even written. Therefore, at the beginning of the CD, the work of the great romantic composer, who was not allowed to be in the foreground due to the customs of the time and her status, is deliberately placed at the beginning of the CD.
