This far-reaching double album, recorded and mixed in three days in Lugano, introduces a new group with Tigran Hamasyan, Arve Henriksen, Eivind Aarset and Jan Bang. The Norwegians had played in diverse configurations on ECM – Jan Bang on Eivind Aarset’s Dream Logic, for instance, and Bang and Aarset on Arve Henriksen’s Cartography – but with Hamasyan at the centre of the sound, bringing with him ancient folk melodies transfigured in the compositions of Komitas, other inspirations come into play. All four players are at a creative peak here, whether freely reflecting upon Armenian themes or spontaneously shaping atmospheric soundscapes together.

We have been hearing about the young prodigy for a long time… Tigran has grown up and is now an experienced and influential artiste on the international jazz scene. After captivating musicians like Chick Corea, Avishai Cohen and Jeff Ballard with his energy and originality, Tigran has managed to conquer a new audience, bringing jazz to a new generation. At the crossover of rock, Armenian folk, metal and jazz, the 26 year old pianist proves that he has everything it takes for greatness.

“He plays piano like a raga, the next Keith Jarrett”. –Trilok Gurtu “Tigran really grabbed me, because it’s got several things going on at once. It has a really wild odd-meter thing, and this distorted, aggressive piano treatment. And the harmony is kind of jazz-fusiony.’ –Brad Mehldau “A..may..zing! Now, Tigran, you are my teacher!” –Herbie Hancock

Tigran Hamasyan’s Nonesuch Records debut album, Mockroot, will be released in February 2015. Tigran’s music draws from a wide range of sources—from jazz and Armenian folk music; Bach and French fin de siècle composers; dubstep, thrash metal, and contemporary electronica. His live performances and six studio albums have received enthusiastic approval from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Brad Mehldau. Where his last album, 2013’s Shadow Theatre, featured an extended band with choral sections, strings, and saxes, Mockroot is based around the tight trio of Tigran on piano and vocals, Sam Minaie on bass guitar, and Arthur Hnatek on drums.

The five tracks here come hot on the heels of An Ancient Observer; and in a sense they are a companion to the album. For Tigran, all these pieces – on the album and on the EP – are musical observations of the world in which we live and the weight of history that we all bear. The Gyumri of the title is the Armenian pianist’s home town. He was born there in 1987 before his family moved to Los Angeles in 2003.

Now based in Yerevan, the Armenian capital, he has touched the sublime by returning to fundamentals. A jazz player with wide-ranging skills, his atypical jazz is highly narrative, because it is stripped bare of any artifice. And as ever in such a context, his improvisations are suffused with poetry, and his piano speaks a marvellous language which is his and his alone.

Nonesuch Records releases its second album from pianist Tigran Hamasyan, “An Ancient Observer”. The album is the follow-up to Hamasyan’s label debut, Mockroot, of which the Guardian said, “A phenomenal piano player, an irrepressible entertainer, a promising experimenter with hi-tech gizmology and a creative world-music composer. Mockroot plays vivaciously to all those strengths”. The musician says of his new solo recording, which features ten new compositions: “These songs are musical observations about the world we live in now, and the weight of history we carry with us”.

Pianist Tigran Hamasyan’s Luys I Luso (“Light from the Light”) is an extraordinary exploration of Armenian sacred music, hymns and sharakans (Armenia’s liturgical songs) as well as chants, all arranged for voices and piano. This music of the 5th to 19th centuries is given new and dramatic expression through Hamasyan’s improvisational imagination and committed performances from Armenia’s leading choir, the Yerevan State Chamber Choir. Hamasayan has long been deeply interested in Armenian sacred music, increasingly drawn to its “incredibly beautiful melodies”. (more…)
