The Teskey Brothers have rounded out the year by announcing their The Circle Sessions live five-track EP, with one of the tracks a rendition of the Ray Charles classic, Drown In My Own Tears, out today.
The EP will be released digitally on January 11, 2024 to their The Circle Session YouTube series, where Teskey Brothers boast nearly 300,000 subscribers. The series has garnered a high profile since its inception, and has featured performances over the years from the likes of Hozier, Lewis Capaldi, Freya Ridings & more.
It will also feature four live tracks from their third studio album The Winding Way album, which debuted at #1 on the ARIA Charts and earned the brothers Best Blues and Roots Album at this year’s ARIA Awards. The live EP features hits such as the heartfelt love letter Take My Heart, the favourite Oceans of Emotions, I’m Leaving and What Will Be.

“The Teskey Brothers (p. noun): A Melbournian group famed for their retro sound, which hails back to the 60s golden age of soul and blues. Founded in 2008 by two brothers, Joshua and Samuel. Related to this topic: Wilson Pickett, Bill Withers, Otis Redding”. That might be what this band’s page in a music encyclopedia would look like. Though that might not be enough: they’re much more than a Sunday blues revival band! Their second studio album, recorded entirely on tape, covers various musical styles, from Man Of The Universe’s sunny Motown cheer, to the Pink-Floyd-ish organ and gospel choirs on Paint My Heart, as well as the snarling vaudeville of Sunshine Baby, which could have been a Tom Waits tune. Despite these different styles, the unifying quality to all of the songs is texture: tape coloration is like a varnish for these finely crafted retro delights. Run Home Slow is more about feeling than execution; the result is as heartfelt as it is well crafted. – Alexis Renaudat

The Teskey brothers come from Australia. But to listen to their remarkably well-made Half Mile Harvest, you would think that they were recording in a smoky little room full of bourbon fumes. Far from the land of the kangaroo, this is a triumph for the Stax spirit in all its humility. Josh and Sam Teskey, accompanied by Liam Gough (drums) and Brendon Love (bass), seem to have been brought up on soul and blues from birth. They take delight in evoking the great masters of the genre such as BB King, Otis Redding and James Brown. The heat steadily rises and the spellbinding electric riffs of Say You’ll Do bring an irresistible sensuality to the whole production. The mixture of blues and southern soul is potent. The music takes a firm hold of the listeners body; and how could you not tap your feet to Pain And Misery? But surprise! Half Mile Harvest doesn’t take on the tones of Soul Time à la Sharon Jones, it instead turns in the direction of bayou blues and subtle swamp rock. The steel effects, big bass notes and harmonica on Shiny Moon and Reason Why lean more towards J.J. Cale and Tony Joe White. The Teskey Brothers aren’t inventing anything, that’s clear enough: but they’re doing a fine job of keeping alive a tradition of black music, which is still very popular today. – Clara Bismuth
