The Pretty Things are an English rock band, formed in 1963 in London. They took their name from Willie Dixon’s 1955 song Pretty Thing. A pure rhythm and blues band in their early years, with several singles charting in the United Kingdom, they later embraced other genres such as psychedelic rock in the late 1960s (with 1968 S.F. Sorrow being one of the first rock operas), hard rock in the early 1970s and new wave in the early 1980s.Despite this, they never managed to recapture the same level of commercial success of their very first releases.

The performance captures the group at the height of their Swan Song era as frontman Phil May leads the band through cuts from 1974’s Silk Torpedo album including Dream / Joey and Come Home Momma along with fan favourites such as Old Man Going from the seminal rock concept album S.F.Sorrow (1968).

At the time of his death earlier this year, Phil May was hugely excited about the impending release of the first-ever, all-acoustic Pretty Things album, which had recently been completed.
The words below were written on the 5th May, just nine days before Phil died. We have left them unchanged as they remain relevant to the album and particularly to Phil and his connection to it. Even at this stage in his career, Phil was enthusiastically looking forward to performing these dark songs live and showcasing fresh on-stage approaches.
Unfortunately, the songs will never be heard live with Phil’s voice, but that doesn’t diminish the power of this remarkable record which stands as a touching tribute to one of the most significant artists of a rightly celebrated generation (and beyond).
