As influential in its own way as early ’70s efforts by Sly and the Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, and Marvin Gaye, the Isley Brothers’ 3+3 took black music to the next level. Combining frontline vocalists O’Kelly, Ronald, and Rudolph with the instrumental chops of younger brothers Ernie and Marvin, plus brother-in-law Chris Jasper, the group broke out with the smoking single “That Lady,” featuring Ernie’s Hendrixian guitar. They followed it up with some soulful reworkings of rock songs of the moment (which, as luck would have it, all turned into certified classics), including the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music,” Seals and Crofts’s “Summer Breeze,” and James Taylor’s “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight.” It’s hard to imagine now how daring a strategy that was at the time, but the results sounds as fine today as ever.

One bit of positive fallout from the seemingly endless glut of remastered CD reissues that fill the record store bins each Tuesday is that they sometimes offer an occasion to throw all critical objectivity to the wind. When a recording is an acknowledged classic, a writer generally has but two options — go against the grain to poke holes in its legacy, or celebrate its already known brilliance and hope there’s some piece of previously unavailable insight to be had. Well, The Isley Brothers’ 1973 soul masterpiece 3 + 3, recently cleaned up and put back into circulation by Epic/Legacy, leaves this critic no choice but to follow the path of least resistance and offer three reasons as to why it’s one of the most indisputably amazing R&B records of all time.

‘Just One Mo’ Time’ is Jasmines second volume of classic recordings by the Isley Brothers. The first release back in 2010 was ‘You Make Me Want To Shout’ which contained 23 recordings from the very beginning of their career. This new set kicks off with the self-penned “Open Up Your Heart” and a bizarre, but fun, doo-wop styled rendition of Victor Herbert’s “Gypsy Love Song” from his operetta ‘The Fortune Teller’. The song is also well known via Mario Lanza. The doo-wop orientated mid-tempo “Write To Me” is a superb example of how the Isley’s were moulding the uptown soul sound that would soon dominate all of R&B music. Also includes their hit song, and undeniable pop music classic, “Twist & Shout” plus a stunning version of Ray Charles “A Fool For You” which reveals Ronald’s talent for bluesy vocalising in spectacular fashion. This CD and its predecessor represent just the first six years of Isley Brothers quite remarkable career.
