When The Band announced their retirement from touring, it was with the important addendum that they’d continue to record together. In actuality, the only album that subsequently emerged was „Island“, which also served to finish out the band’s contract with Capitol Records. At the time of its release in 1977, it was received with some dismay by fans anxious for a repeat of the powerful „Northern Lights Southern Cross“ of two years previous. With the passing of time having removed the pressures of those expectations, „Island“ can be heard as an album that, while fragmented, includes some fine gems. The musicianship throughout is never less than compelling. Richard Manuel’s vocal on “Georgia On My Mind” is alone worth the price of admission–he sings it as if the thousand other classic versions never existed.

Even after a 2000 remaster, the clarity of the 50th anniversary edition of Cahoots is a marvel. From that first crisp horn squeal of the joyous “Life Is a Carnival,” you can feel the life within. Guitarist Robbie Roberston (along with organist Garth Hudson, the only surviving members of The Band) oversaw the reissue, with a new stereo mix by Bob Clearmountain from the original masters that place you right there in Bearsville studio with them: Levon Helm’s idiosyncratic voice and Hudson’s accordion stunning on the cover of Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece”; Richard Manuel’s vocals and Robertson’s slip-sliding guitar total knockouts on “Last of the Blacksmiths.” Van Morrison’s guest run on “4% Pantomine” is crystal clear, and the horns on “Volcano” are so bright as to make the original recording sound mired in mud. The calling card here, though, is an 11-song chunk of an unreleased recording of The Band’s Olympic Theatre concert from May 1971 in Paris. It includes a particularly jaunty take on “Across the Great Divide,” as well as live stalwarts “W.S. Walcott Medicine Show” and “The Genetic Method/Chest Fever.” There’s a stomping take on “Don’t Do it” (aka Marvin Gaye’s “Baby Don’t You Do It”) along with spark-plug covers of Little Richard’s “Slippin’ and Slidin'” and the Motown classic “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever,” which was also The Band’s Woodstock set closer. And you get bass-forward versions of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and “Rag Mama Rag” and what was likely one of their last performances of the jokey “We Can Talk.” It’s strictly a fans-only affair, but then again why else would you be listening to a 50th anniversary reissue? Other extras include a stripped-down mix of “Thinkin’ Out Loud” that is absent the original’s richness but puts the sweet harmonies on a pedestal, and instrumentals of “Life is a Carnival” and “Volcano.” And outtakes like “Bessie Smith” show The Band’s enduring legacy—and its influence on acts from Beachwood Sparks to Dawes. – Shelly Ridenour

The 1974 tour by Bob Dylan and the Band brought together two of the most-respected acts in rock history for what was one of the biggest concert events of the decade. Recorded at several different venues over the course of the two-month tour, „Before The Flood“ captures Dylan and The Band in fine form. Having backed Dylan on and off since 1966, The Band were very comfortable with his music, and on this album they provide Dylan with some of the finest accompaniment of his career.

Dylan opens the show with spirited versions of hits like “It Ain’t Me Babe” and “Lay Lady Lay,” as well as the acidic “Ballad of a Thin Man.” Having fired up the crowd, Dylan steps away from the mike to let the Band perform barnstorming versions of “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” and other classics from their repertoire. After The Band nearly brings down the house with their intense rendition of “The Weight,” Dylan returns to bring it all back home with powerful performances of “Like A Rolling Stone” and “Blowin’ In The Wind,” providing a spectacular finale to one of the finest live rock albums of the ’70s.

The Band was a Canadian-American roots rock group that originally consisted of Rick Danko (bass guitar, double bass, fiddle, trombone, vocals), Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, vocals), Garth Hudson (keyboard instruments, saxophones, trumpet), Richard Manuel (piano, drums, baritone saxophone, vocals) and Robbie Robertson (guitar, vocals). The members of the Band first came together as they joined rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins’ backing group The Hawks one by one between 1958 and 1963.

In 1964, they separated from Hawkins, after which they toured and released a few singles as Levon and the Hawks and the Canadian Squires. The next year, Bob Dylan hired them for his U.S. tour in 1965 and world tour in 1966.Following the 1966 tour, the group moved with Dylan to Saugerties, New York, where they made the informal 1967 recordings that became The Basement Tapes, which forged the basis for their 1968 debut album Music from Big Pink. Because they were always “the band” to various frontmen, Helm said the name “the Band” worked well when the group came into its own.The group began performing officially as the Band in 1968, and went on to release ten studio albums. Dylan continued to collaborate with the Band over the course of their career, including a joint 1974 tour.

The original configuration of the Band ended its touring career in 1976 with an elaborate live ballroom performance featuring numerous musical celebrities. This performance was immortalized in Martin Scorsese’s 1978 documentary The Last Waltz. The Band recommenced touring in 1983 without guitarist Robbie Robertson, who had found success with a solo career and as a Hollywood music producer. Following a 1986 show, Richard Manuel was found dead of suicide, but the remaining three members continued to tour and record albums with a revolving door of musicians filling Manuel’s and Robertson’s respective roles, before finally settling on Richard Bell, Randy Ciarlante, and Jim Weider. Danko died of heart failure in 1999, after which the group broke up for good. Levon Helm was diagnosed with throat cancer in 1998, and after a series of treatments was able to regain use of his voice. He continued to perform and released several successful albums until he succumbed to the disease in 2012.

The group was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked them No. 50 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time, and in 2008, they received the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2004, “The Weight” was ranked the 41st best song of all time in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.

In 2014, The Band was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame.
