For many years, Tabea Zimmermann has been regarded as one of the most renowned musicians of our time. Audiences and fellow musicians value her charismatic personality and deep musical understanding. Arguably the finest violist in the world today, Tabea Zimmermann owes her success not only to her exceptional talent, but also to the support of her parents, thorough training by excellent teachers, and a tireless enthusiasm to communicate her understanding and love of music to her audience. As a soloist she regularly works with the most distinguished orchestras worldwide such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, London Symphony Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic. Following residencies in Weimar, Luxembourg, Hamburg and with the Bamberg Symphony, Tabea Zimmermann was artist-in-residence with the Ensemble Resonanz in 2013/14 and 2014/15, and continues this close collaboration this season. In the 2015/16 season, she was artist-in-residence of the Frankfurt Museums-Gesellschaft.

The music of Michael Jarrell has been said to “examine states of dream and unreality, searching for a moment of truth” – a truth which is often found in the lowest sonorities and slowest tempi, a place where time stands still. His works are often interrelated, not only by a certain sensitivity or a distinctive tone, but also by the recurrence of particular features that he reworks in different contexts.

The present recording combines two recent concertos, each of them performed by its dedicatee. In July 2019, three years after they gave the first performance of Émergences-Résurgences, Tabea Zimmermann rejoined l’Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and Pascal Rophé in order to record the work. In the liner notes Jarrell describes his method in the concerto in visual terms: “Curves, colours, chiaroscuro or strong lines; I tried to integrate a pictorial dimension into the scheme of this piece…”

Musical instruments made to sing! This album invites you to travel from Spain to South America in the company of the greatest composers the countries of the region have produced: next to Spanish folk songs reshaped by Falla, compositions by Casals, Granados, Montsalvatge, and the beloved Ária from the Bachiana brasileira by Villa-Lobos, an Argentine tango by Piazzolla is paired with its Spanish counterpart by Albéniz (though his is in the form of a habanera). A wide-ranging programme which brings together two virtuoso soloists… who are not about to part.

An unusual and yet particularly clever juxtaposition can be found on this album, which consists in mirroring Schumann’s 1853 Märchenerzählungen (Tales, implicitly for children) for viola, clarinet and piano – as well as, still in the realm of fairy tales, Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) for clarinet and piano and then Märchenbilder(Fairy Tale Pictures) for viola and piano – and Jörg Widmann’s Es war einmal… Fünf Stücke im Märchenton (Once Upon a Time – Five Pieces in a Fairy Tale Tone). While being a contemporary, even a modernist artist, Widmann was indeed largely inspired by Schumann’s Märchenerzählungen, his work sprinkling with reminiscences, allusions and barely disguised quotes, superimposed to today’s language – so much that, at some point, one could be led to believe both tracks were playing at the same time, Schumann’s and Widmann’s! Ever since the first great creators, the art of “recycling”, reusing and rewriting is one of the main driving forces behind artistic creation; in fact Widmann is only following this proven model. Tabea Zimmermann on viola, Dénes Várjon on piano and on clarinet, no other than the composer himself: Widmann of course, not Schumann who, as everyone knows, doesn’t play the clarinet.

Brahms was one of the first composers to write for pairs of violins, violas and cellos, blazing the trail for Dvořák, Tchaikovsky, Korngold and Schoenberg. His two sextets are early works, composed in 1860 and 1865 respectively. Brahms wrote to his publisher that the Second was in “the same joyful vein” as the First. Yet the composer’s life was sombre at this time: his mother died suddenly and his romantic relationship with the soprano Agathe von Siebold ended in failure; indeed, the first movement of the Sextet opens with a viola motif on the notes A-G-A-D-B-E (AGADHE in German notation). The members of the Belcea Quartet called in their friends Tabea Zimmermann and Jean-Guihen Queyras to record these peaks of the chamber repertory following a concert tour to some of Europe’s major venues.

The repertoire of the new album revels in the Romantic tradition of the instrument with Schuman’s popular Three Romances and works by contemporaries of Brahms and Liszt composed for Mayer’s instrument: Heinrich Herzogenberg’s Trio for Oboe, Horn, and Piano and August Klughardt’s five fantasy pieces Schilflieder (Song of the Reeds) for oboe, viola, and piano

Albrecht Mayer is joined by outstanding viola player Tabea Zimmermann, horn player Marie-Luise Neunecker, and by Markus Becker at the piano, “unbeatable as a virtuoso, a musical soul painter with great understanding” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)

The album title is taken from the title of the work by Klughardt and acknowledges the longing of Romantic music, the acclaimed vocal tone of Albrecht Mayer’s playing, and the reed which gives his instrument its unique voice
