Sergei Prokofiev wrote his Symphony No. 5 in B-flat major, Op. 100, in Soviet Russia in one month in the summer of 1944. Fourteen years had passed since Prokofiev wrote the first version of his Symphony No. 4 in C major. World War II was still raging during the symphony’s gestation, and Prokofiev composed it in the Soviet Union. He gave out in a statement at the time that he intended it as “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble spirit.” He added “I cannot say that I deliberately chose this theme. It was born in me and clamoured for expression. The music matured within me. It filled my soul.

Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (colloquially known as the Appassionata, meaning “passionate” in Italian) is among the three famous piano sonatas of his middle period (the others being the Waldstein, Op. 53 and Les Adieux, Op. 81a); it was composed during 1804 and 1805, and perhaps 1806, and was dedicated to Count Franz von Brunswick. The first edition was published in February 1807 in Vienna.

Unlike the early Sonata No. 8, Pathétique, the Appassionata was not named during the composer’s lifetime, but was so labelled in 1838 by the publisher of a four-hand arrangement of the work. Instead, Beethoven’s autograph manuscript of the sonata has “La Passionata” written on the cover, in Beethoven’s hand.

One of his greatest and most technically challenging piano sonatas, the Appassionata was considered by Beethoven to be his most tempestuous piano sonata until the twenty-ninth piano sonata (known as the Hammerklavier). 1803 was the year Beethoven came to grips with the irreversibility of his progressively deteriorating hearing.

An average performance of the entire Appassionata sonata lasts about twenty-five minutes.

Richter’s creative flair lifts hitherto neglected pieces by Tchaikovsky to the level of Mussorgsky’s mighty ‘Pictures’ in recordings from Moscow to New York.

A Russian pianist known for the depth of his interpretations, virtuoso technique, and vast repertoire, Richter is considered one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century and his approach resulted in some of the most distinctive and individual performances of the piano repertoire ever recorded. In later life he took to playing at very short notice in small, most often darkened halls, with only a small lamp lighting the score. Richter said that this setting helped the audience focus on the music being performed, rather than the performer’s grimaces and gestures.

Richter only played Rachmaninov’s first two concertos before embarking on his international career in 1960. A logical compilation of two live performances plus four Préludes which were to remain his favourites for the next 50 years. A unique programme which today’s cutting edge techniques have attempted to render in all their original glory.

Juxtaposition of the First and Seconde Grande Sonate for pianoforte of 1825, one a melancholic, intimate effusion that will not smile even in its concluding rondo, voluntarist and threatening; the other, brimming with frothy joy close to a stylized Tyrolienne, then a refined Ländler whose emotional invention heralds Bruckner, followed by a moderato as light as it is timeless in its innocent, inalterable gaiety. A portrait such as only Richter the painter knew how to compose.

Richter conquered Paris with this kind of Schubert scores. The last and immense Piano Sonata No.21 in B flat major, D 960 (1828) stayed a long time in his repertoire chasing the ‘small’, once faciend sonatas. He captures the brillant ambiguity of these serie of exclamations, more a cycle of irmpromptus than a real sonata dixit Beethoven, its strict architecture opposing its instinctive imaginativness. Richter exudes overwhelming charm of an isolated Impomptu before respecting the post mozartian baroau approach in the 1819 small A major Sonata D 664.
