Each track on Javelin starts intimately: the trickle of an acoustic guitar, the patter of a lidded piano, and the cascade of a coruscant arpeggio. And then, of course, there is that disarming voice, the throughline in one of the most eclectic catalogs of any songwriter this century—soft but strong, as if the very scenes of hurt and hope it is about to share have only galvanized it through the decades. Javelin pairs musical sweep with emotional breadth, an entire lifetime of feeling woven into 42-minutes. On Javelin, Sufjan, as you may know him best, returns: offering gorgeous if pained glimpses of himself, so that we may see ourselves more fully.

The title of “The Decalogue” has a touch of the grandiose: it means “The Ten Commandments.” Yet this score, composed by Sufjan Stevens for a dance work choreographed by Justin Peck that premiered with the New York City Ballet in May of 2017, is quiet and experimental. Stevens’s piano score, as played and recorded by Timo Andres, sounds like etudes in the Romantic-modernist tradition, as if prompted by Debussy.

The Ascension is the eighth studio album from singer, songwriter and composer Sufjan Stevens and is the long awaited follow-up to Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell. One of the most acclaimed albums of 2015, The New York Times praised Carrie & Lowell as “restrained and meticulous” while Pitchfork declared it “a masterpiece.” In the time between Carrie & Lowell and the forthcoming The Ascension, Stevens also released Oscar-nominated music for the Luca Guadagnino film Call Me By Your Name; a collaborative album entitled Planetarium with Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner (The National) and James McAlister; The Decalogue, a solo piano work performed by Timo Andres; and scored several works for ballet: Reflections (Houston Ballet) and Principia (NYCB). The Ascension is musically expansive and sweeping in thematic scope.

Sufjan Stevens shared “Revelation II”. The track is part of the singer-songwriter’s five-volume album, Convocations, and will appear on the third volume, Revelations, due out on Thursday, April 22 via Asthmatic Kitty. Sufjan Stevens wrote and recorded Convocations in Fall 2020 as a tribute to his father who died in September just days after Stevens released his album, The Ascension. Stevens announced Convocations earlier this month and subsequently released the first and second volumes, Meditations and Lamentations.

Sufjan Stevens has announced Convocations, a five-volume album that follows on the heels of last year’s The Ascension.

The instrumental LP will be in tribute to his biological father, who died in September 2020, two days after the release of The Ascension. Each volume from Convocations is meant to reflect a different stage of the mourning process; a tweet from Stevens’ label, Asthmatic Kitty, described it as “a 49-track reflection on a year of anxiety, uncertainty, isolation, and loss.”

Last year, two days after Sufjan Stevens released his grandiose, depressive electro-pop opus The Ascension, his biological father died. Naturally, this set off an emotional chain reaction, and naturally, Sufjan has processed all those feelings through music — a lot of music. Last week he began releasing Convocations, a series of five instrumental albums spanning 49 tracks over two and a half hours. By the first week of May, they’ll all be released together as a five-LP set.

It may be tempting to reduce Convocations into a longform ambient anomaly within Sufjan Stevens’ vast catalogue. It is, however, neither an anomaly nor entirely ambient. This is not a side project. From his numerous dance scores for New York City Ballet to instrumental albums such as Enjoy Your Rabbit, Aporia, and The BQE, Stevens spends at least half his working life making largely instrumental music, as he has for decades. And though the first ten pieces, dubbed “Meditations,” unfurl as gorgeous states of reflective new-age grace, this is by no means an ambient enterprise. Stevens invokes the lessons of Morton Subotnick, Maryanne Amacher, Christian Fennesz, Brian Eno, and Wolfgang Voigt here. As musically erudite as it is emotionally experienced, Convocations can be dissonant, vertiginous, rhythmic, repetitive, urgent, or calm—that is, all the things we undergo when we inevitably live through loss, isolation, and anxiety.

Often-winged singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens has unveiled a new song from his five-part instrumental album Convocations, which he’s been rolling out one volume per week. This week’s installment, Celebrations, is the fourth in the project, following the full-lengths Meditations, Lamentations, and Revelations, all ten tracks reckoning with the grief after his biological father passed year. Today’s ambient track “Celebration VIII” reverberates with the atmosphere of some kind of spiritual nature, like being in a forest while tripping LSD. The synths are like bugs clattering or birds chirping. This, I believe, represents the fourth stage of mourning, so depression — which makes sense why the song has a dreary, echoey texture to it.

Aporia is a New Age album from Sufjan Stevens and his step-father and record label co-owner, Lowell Brams. In the spirit of the New Age composers who sanded off the edges of their synths’ sawtooth waves, Aporia approximates a rich soundtrack from an imagined sci-fi epic brimming with moody, hooky, gauzy synthesizer soundscapes. The album may suggest the progeny of a John Carpenter, Wendy Carlos, and Mike Oldfield marriage, but it stands apart from these touchstones and generates a meditative universe all its own. This is no mere curio in the Sufjan Stevens catalog – but a fully realized collaborative musical piece.

After having the promise of post-pandemic hope seemingly pulled out from under the world like a cheap rug, most of us could do with a balm. Songwriters Sufjan Stevens and Angelo De Augustine deliver the goods in the form of a truly comforting diversion. Stevens, of course, loves a concept album: He’s made them about the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Michigan and Illinois, and his mother’s tragic life and death. This time, he teams with lo-fi California singer-songwriter De Augustine, who has made two albums for Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label. The theme is philosophical musings on movies, ranging from Old Hollywood (All About Eve) to monster flicks (The Thing), horror (Hellraiser III, Night of the Living Dead), modern classics (She’s Gotta Have It, Silence of the Lambs; the album is dedicated to director Jonathan Demme who died in 2017), even action (Point Break). Opener “Reach Out”-based on director Wim Wenders’ fantasy Wings of Desire-is a mindbender: Is this sublime harmony and gentle guitar Simon & Garfunkel circa 1965? Then there’s the twee and wistful, almost medieval folk of “Olympus” whose chanted “There’s no place like home” chorus might make you think The Wizard of Oz but is, in fact, based on Clash of the Titans and focuses on the love story of Perseus and Andromeda: “It’s the light on your hand/ It’s the touch of my wristband.” The magical land instead informs the dreamy “Back to Oz” although the source material here is the 1985 Fairuza Balk-starring sequel Return to Oz; it could almost pass for a Tame Impala song with twinkling melody, smooth guitar and the “get it right, follow my heart” message. Said De Augustine: “In the film, Dorothy returns to the world of Oz to find its landscape in ruins and its citizens frozen in stone. Only she can find the ruby slippers and return peace to Oz. Only we can save ourselves, but we first have to remember who we truly are.” He and Stevens approached the songwriting process with a sense of shoshin-the Zen Buddhist concept (translating to “beginner’s mind”) that encourages a lack of preconceptions and an embrace of eagerness. Which is pretty good advice when you’re using the movie “Bring It On Again”-not even the original, but the 2004 sequel-as fodder. “Fictional California” strips away the cheerleading story’s pep and bop but keeps a sun-dappled feel and offers surprising insight: “I look alive but I feel so dead inside, I’m bleeding/ Gonna break a leg with a basket toss/ For the loss of my broken dreams.” – Shelly Ridenour

In celebration of Pride Month, Sufjan Stevens is releasing two new songs on the topic of love: “Love Yourself” and “With My Whole Heart,” available on limited-edition 7” vinyl and on all digital platforms May 29, 2019. “Love Yourself” is based on a sketch Sufjan wrote 20 years ago. The original 4-track demo he recorded in 1996 is included as well as a short instrumental reprise. “With My Whole Heart” is a completely new song that Sufjan wrote as a personal challenge to “write an upbeat and sincere love song without conflict, anxiety, or self-deprecation.” Sufjan also designed a new Gay Pride T-shirt that is available on his new merchandizing platform Sufjamz. A portion of the proceeds from this project will support two organizations that offer help for LGBTQ+ homeless kids in America—the Ali Forney Center in Harlem, NY, and the Ruth Ellis Center in Detroit, MI.

In 2013, Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner of The National, Nico Muhly and drummer James McAlister took to the stage with a string quartet to perform a project inspired by the solar system. A pretext as good as any other for discovering, once again, the gifts of the talented melodist Sufjan Stevens. Four years later, this adventure, entitled Planetarium has been committed to vinyl. The good news is that the cosmos conjured up by the indy supergroup never falls into the trap of sounding like a chin-stroking new age soundtrack. No, each composition can be enjoyed independently, like a little planet unto itself. And indeed the tracks on the album take their names from the planets of the solar system (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto…) moving from pop to prog rock, from electro to neo-classical, with true grace. An original and inspiring record.
