Revitalized by their association in 2015 with Franz Ferdinand (their number one fans!) on the FFS project, the Sparks give birth to a 25th album. Now in their seventies, the brothers Ron and Russell Mael haven’t lost their glam pop recipe, sugary on top but acidic on the inside. 45 years after their formation under the Californian sun, the Sparks find again the fire that inhabits some of their greatest hits. The Dantesque This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us is admittedly far away—it dates from 1974 to be precise. Even so, Hippopotamus contains enough extravagance (the director Leos Carax’s voice onWhen You’re a French Director!) and cheekiness to hold our attention. Grandiloquent chords here, minimalist disco there, electropop after that: you just have to let yourself be carried away by the silversmithery of these craftsmen that are still as inspired as before.

In October, the Duo embarks on a small European Tour, on which the Sparks can also be seen in Germany on 15 October. ‘The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte’ marks Sparks’ first release on the venerable Island Records label in close to five decades, following such classics as 1974’s landmark Kimono ‘My House’, highlighted of course by the indelible hit single ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us’. The album includes such instantly intriguing new musical vignettes as ‘Mona Lisa’s Packing, Leaving Late Tonight’ and ‘Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is’, songs which once again display Sparks’ seemingly ceaseless ability to craft complete, intricately detailed stories within perfect three-and-a-half minute pop masterpieces. Nº 1 in Heaven is the eighth studio album by American rock band Sparks. Recorded with Italian disco producer Giorgio Moroder, the album marked a change of musical direction for the group and became influential on later synth-pop bands.[citation needed]

Released in March 1979 by Virgin Records (with initial copies on colored vinyl) and later licensed to Elektra Records in the US, Nº 1 in Heaven renewed interest in the band after disappointing sales of the preceding albums Big Beat (1976) and Introducing Sparks (1977). It is the band’s only album on Elektra, the fourth label that the band was signed to in the US.
