According to vocalist/guitarist Dave Pirner, making Soul Asylum’s twelfth studio full-length, HURRY UP AND WAIT, was a completely seamless, enjoyable and productive experience. Co-produced with John Fieldsand recorded at Minneapolis’ Nicollet Studios, the same place where the celebrated rock band recorded seminal early albums released on Twin/Tone Recordsthe album reflects Soul Asylum’s usual eclectic approach. Lyrically, songs dive into topics such as grappling with emotional and geographic disconnection, navigating romantic ebbs and flows, and the power of embracing optimism despite it all. Sonically, HURRY UP AND WAIT features thrashing songs indebted to punk (“”Hopped Up Feelin'””) and classic rock (“”Got It Pretty Good””), folk-influenced pop-rock (“”Silly Things””), and gorgeous jangle-pop (lead single “”If I Told You””).

Limited to 2000 copies, the VMP exclusive edition of Soul Asylum’s Grave Dancers Union (30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is pressed on Green in Black vinyl at GZ Vinyl. The 2 LPs will arrive in a double gatefold, reverse board, foil-stamped and numbered jacket. It was mastered for vinyl by Bob Ludwig at Gateway Mastering Studios.

Soul Asylum’s breakthrough, million-selling Grave Dancers Union yielded the mega-hit “Runaway Train” and put the band in a whole new league; longtime fans were predictably disappointed with the slick results. This is a solid alternative rock record with singer/songwriter/vocalist Dave Pirner upfront, a role he was built for but always seemed to resist until this clear do-or-die moment for the band. Soul Asylum did; however, they never matched the success or consistency of this album. Tracks like “Home Sick” and “New World” bear the roots of the country-rock revival later forged by Son Volt and Wilco, while the angst-ridden “Somebody to Shove” is pure joy Soul Asylum-style. – Denise Sullivan

Soul Asylum was formed in Minneapolis in 1983 mixing tuneful but unrestrained punk, hardcore, 1970s rock, country and self-effacing kitsch. One early review described their sound as follows: some unholy mix of Kiss and Hank Williams thrown under the wheels of a runaway train. All elements contributed to the band being credited with a grunge precursor title, a claim often recited in comparisons between pre-Nirvana Minneapolis and Seattle bands. “Change of Fortune” is Soul Asylum’s 11th full length studio album.
