Joyful Noise Recordings announce Alternate Forms, a track-by-track reworking of Academy Award and BAFTA nominees Son Lux’s critically acclaimed breakthrough 2013 album Lanterns. The opening track on Alternate Forms, Kishi Bashi’s “Alternate World (Alternate Life)”, sets the tone for the entire album. Kishi Bashi has radically reimagined the song in his own voice, creating a wholly new mood and arrangement, laced with his signature pop magic. Son Lux and Kishi Bashi were label-mates at Joyful Noise Recordings at the time of Lanterns’ release. Both artists share an uncommon ability to create sweeping symphonic landscapes in the confined space of a 4-minute pop song – as you’ll hear on “Alternate World (Alternate Life)”.

More pervasive than a virus, anxiety and urgency has spread across our physical and virtual landscapes. The air of the present moment find parallels on the newest body of work by Son Lux: Tomorrows, a long-format album to be released in three volumes over the course of a year. On Tomorrows, Ryan Lott, Rafiq Bhatia, and Ian Chang train their sights on volatile principles: imbalance, disruption, collision, redefinition. But for all of its instability, Tomorrows’ exploration of breaking points and sustained frictional places is ultimately in service of something rewarding and necessary: the act of questioning, challenging, tearing down and actively rebuilding one’s own identity.

As Tomorrows II opens, the listener joins an album already unfolding. The music provides an appropriate parallel for the sustained cacophony of the present moment, advancing a friction that reveals the strange in the familiar and the familiar in the strange. While this carefully crafted inversion acclimatizes the ear to tension, the steadily hardening exterior fractures at unlikely moments, revealing a strikingly visceral, emotional core. The process of creating Tomorrows is iterative in nature, with the lyrical content and music continually adapting and responding to one another and the shifting landscape of the moment.

Remnants is a compelling collection of rare and previously unreleased recordings by Son Lux spanning 2008 to 2017. These recordings include pieces commissioned for dance, drastic reimaginings of existing Son Lux songs, and three outtakes from the first Son Lux release, At War With Walls & Mazes. More than a decade after inception, Son Lux has shifted from Lott’s singular vision into a three-piece ensemble featuring virtuoso musicians Ian Chang on drums, and Rafiq Bhatia on guitar, and Son Lux’s continually evolving recordings still point toward an exciting musical future that contemporary pop music has yet to realize.

Son Lux is the grand genre-less dream of Los Angeles composer Ryan Lott brought to roiling, vivid life with the help of two New Yorkers, guitarist Rafiq Bhatia and drummer Ian Chang. Each is a writer, producer, and performer with omnivorous taste and a penchant for wild improvisation a band whose mix of electronic pop, unusual soul, and outright experimentalism feels more inviting than ever on the project’s fifth album, ‘Brighter Wounds.’ The songs therein leave behind Son Lux’s typically universal themes for deeply personal fare. While making ‘Brighter Wounds,’ Lott became a father to a baby boy and lost a best friend to cancer. Days of “firsts” were also days of “lasts,” and the normal fears that accompany parenthood were compounded by a frightening new reality Lott’s son arrived shortly after Election Day. These songs draw on all of that: warm reflections of a fading past, pain wrenched from a still-present loss, and a mix of anxiety and hope for a future that is promised to no one.

Now, Son Lux is a band. A trio, to be exact; one that has meticulously woven together dizzying percussion, fraying guitar, symphonic bluster, and haunting vocals into a quaking and vivid post-pop (post-everything) burst called Bones. The fourth Son Lux album combines all of the architectural precision and aural inventiveness we’ve come to expect, with more immediacy and melody than ever. That’s all to do with the crew.
