Slipknot singer Corey Taylor knew his band was destined for greatness. He also knew that it wouldn’t come easy.
“When we were starting out, we had all these strikes against us,” he says. “We were from Iowa, there were nine of us, we wore masks, we wore coveralls, we played metal. Hard metal.”
“It was tough getting people to come out to Des Moines,” adds bassist Paul Gray. “I don’t know why, it’s a pretty cool place. But A&R dudes – jaded folks from Los Angeles or New York – it’s hard to get them to come to Iowa.”
“And then there were all the haters,” says Taylor.
Ah, the haters. The people who liked nothing more than to give the band flack for its look, for substituting numbers for names, for putting on a show full of over-the-top chaos and unmitigated mayhem. Some of the comments came from the usual assortment of web sites and so-called music critics. But, surprisingly, “we also took a lot of shit from other bands,” says guitarist James Root. “When we hit the road with Ozzfest in 1999, I heard a lot of condescending remarks from other musicians. They were saying, ‘Slipknot won’t sell enough records, they won’t survive, they’ve got too many people, nobody’s gonna get it, they’re all about image.'”
“The joke’s on them,” says Taylor with wicked glee. “Our music stood up. We’re much more popular now and it wasn’t because of our image. It was the music.”
Slipknot – which features DJ Sid Wilson (0), drummer Joey Jordison (1), Gray (2),percussionist Chris Fehn (3) Root (4), sampler Craig Jones – 133 (5), percussionist M. Shawn Crahan – Clown (6), guitarist Mick Thomson (7) and Taylor (8) – is still heavy, still enamored of great, big walls of deeply textured layers of sound. But this time, they’ve approached their music with an eye towards stylistic expression that completely invalidates any and all comments about heavy metal clichés. Moreover, they’ve continued the exploration of melody that began on their first record.

The strange goings-on in the world of Slipknot continue with the launch of a 20-minute EP and a website featuring a disturbing video with an extremely ominous soundtrack.
The more popular a band gets, the harder it gets for them to maintain a sense of mystery or intrigue about what they do, but the last 24 hours have proved that Slipknot are still masters of the craft.
First they made an announcement that samplist and keyboard Craig Jones had left the band. Then they deleted the announcements. Then they posted a picture of a new member, who some fans maintain is actually Craig, but with a new mask. Then they took to the stage for the first show of their European tour without Craig (or perhaps with Craig, but in a new mask) and without Clown (who is taking a break to look after his wife, who is ill).
The intrigue didn’t stop there. Late yesterday Slipknot posted a short video on Instagram featuring some extremely ominous visuals and music, and a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it URL, youcantkillme.com. That address features an email sign-up form and a disturbing video entitled Death March, which appears to feature a slowed-down, reversed version of Adderall (the opening track from from last year’s The End, So Far album).
The latest episode in this burst of crazed activity finds a new EP hitting streaming platforms, with the six-track Adderall EP available now (or available soon, timezones permitting).
Slipknot headline the Sunday night of this weekend’s historic, four-day Download festival in the UK. Their full list of European tour dates for summer 2023 can be seen below.

Directed by SLIPKNOT’s own M.Shawn Crahan, aka Clown, Day of The Gusano documents the Iowa band’s first ever visit to the country in December 2015 and features exclusive interviews with SLIPKNOT’s members talking about the importance of their fanbase and the band’s long awaited first ever show in Mexico City.
Talking about the movie, Clown says, “SLIPKNOT still has dreams for itself. Finally playing Mexico was one of them. It’s been a surreal life of rock and roll for SLIPKNOT and the fact that the dreams still go on for us is simply incredible. Thank you.” Guitarist Jim Root continues, “We had such a great time at Knotfest Mexico… Not only with all the friends and bands that were there, but with the fans and the crowd we had to document it with. Now we get to share it with the world.”
‘Day of the Gusano’ also chronicles the rabid devotion of the Mexican maggots and sees the band hearing personal, emotive stories from some of their fans, all interspersed with footage from SLIPKNOT’s incendiary live show at the inaugural KNOTFEST Mexico.
