Sir Simon Rattle pays homage to a composer he holds close to his heart with An Imaginary Orchestral Journey through the music of Joseph Haydn. Rattle trawls through the great composer’s impressive catalogue, piecing together excerpts from symphonies, oratorios and operas spanning a 40-year period in what the director describes as ‘a kind of greatest hits’ format.

“The idea is to make a musical journey through all that is quirky and extraordinary, humorous and profound in Haydn,” the LSO’s Music Director explains. Sir Simon’s focus is on Haydn as innovator, showcasing his most forward-looking and outlandish works in 50 minutes of uninterrupted performance.

What results from Sir Simon’s pasticcio is a clear image of the composer he sees to best represent the ideals of the Enlightenment, his selection meticulously arranged to best demonstrate Haydn’s intelligence, wit and thoughtfulness.

In November 2017, the Berlin Philharmonic gave a series of concerts in Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan. It was the last tour of Asia that Rattle would undertake as the orchestra’s chief conductor, and their performances are thoroughly documented on these discs. Four of the discs are derived from the final pair of concerts, which were given in Tokyo’s magnificent Suntory Hall, while the other, a performance of Ravel’s G Major Piano Concerto with the winner of the 2015 Warsaw Chopin competition as soloist, was recorded in the Berlin Philharmonie before the tour began. he recordings are astonishingly vivid, and the whole set provides a very impressive showcase of the Berlin Phil’s current condition as it nears the end of Rattle’s reign.

Composed in 1803, while Beethoven was also writing the “Eroica” Symphony, Christ on the Mount of Olives (Christus am Ölberge) is the composer’s only oratorio, and combines the emotive force of his later Missa Solemnis with the theater of a Bach Passion. With orchestra, chorus and soloists, it tells the story of Jesus’ prayer and arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane and also reflects the emotional pressure Beethoven was under at the time. This recording by Sir Simon Rattle, with acclaimed singers Elsa Dreisig, Pavol Breslik and David Soar, was made during the London Symphony Orchestra’s celebration of Beethoven’s 250th anniversary.

Recordings of all the Beethoven symphonies with their chief conductor are always a milestone in the artistic work of the Berliner Philharmoniker. So it was with Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, and expectations are correspondingly high for this cycle conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Where does the special status of these symphonies come from? Simon Rattle has an explanation: “One of the things Beethoven does is to give you a mirror into yourself – where you are now as a musician.” In fact, this music contains such a wealth of extreme emotions and brilliant compositional ideas that reveal the qualities of the orchestra and its conductor as if under a magnifying glass.

Melodious and charming, The Cunning Little Vixen is a work rooted in Czech history and folk music; a sentimental journey through the cycles of life. For Sir Simon Rattle, it’s a deeply personal and emotional work. “It’s the piece that made me want to become an opera conductor… and still one of the pieces that reduces me to tears more easily than any other,” says the LSO’s Music Director. Recorded with an outstanding cast during semi-staged performances, this recording is the second in an LSO Live series showcasing acclaimed collaborations between Rattle and the celebrated stage director Peter Sellars. Towering fanfares open Janácek’s Sinfonietta, an ode to the composer’s hometown of Brno in the now Czech Republic. It’s a portrait composed for a national celebration of Slavic culture, with Janácek’s love of musical tradition evident in dancing strings and celebratory brass.

Simon Rattle and the Berliner Philharmoniker take on a myth with their complete performance of the last three symphonies by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The full diversity of Mozart’s symphonic style was on display when the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle presented the last three of these works at the 2013 season opening concert. It was also a perfect example of the orchestra’s Mozart style which during the Rattle era has seen an increased exploration of historical performance practice. The performances reveal a blend of transparency, orchestral warmth – and the inspiration of the conductor, about whom one critic wrote, “Simon Rattle deeply taps the potential of Mozart’s symphonies. […] He is not just a great musician, but a sentient artist through and through.”

Stravinsky sent shockwaves through classical music in the 20th century. His first three ballets -The Firebird, Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, all composed between 1909 and 1913 – brought a new and frenzied sense of rhythm, so distressing to audiences that it caused uproar; The Rite of Spring even caused a riot. And it’s not hard to see why. Is there any moment in music more demonic than the opening to The Firebird, a terrifying rumble of strings that would make Jaws tremble? There are few pieces more unsettling than The Rite of Spring with it’s carnal, tribal rhythms; or Petrushka with it’s impish Punch and Judy puppets. A notable voice of authority on the works of Stravinsky, Sir Simon Rattle masterfully brings these three creations to life in this dramatic performance, recorded live in the Barbican Hall as part of his inaugural season as LSO’s Music Director.

Bruckner’s Symphony No.6 is one of the most original of all the composer’s symphonic works. Its contrasting mood and overarching theme moving from darkness to light can be haunting one moment and ecstatic the next, culminating in one of the most enigmatic symphonic conclusions of the 19th century. For this recording, Sir Simon Rattle chose the Benjamin-Gunnar Cohrs Urtext edition of the score, having conducted the UK premiere of the new publication with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in 2016.

Sir Simon Rattle and the London Symphony Orchestra mark 150 years since the death of Hector Berlioz with his tempestuous oratorio, La damnation de Faust.

La damnation de Faust is a work born of the composer’s obsession with Goethe’s legendary tale. Once a righteous scholar, Faust allows himself to be corrupted by the devil, and drags the innocent around him into desperation and death. It’s a fable that defies definition – both a tragedy and dark comedy, with a central character both wise and despicable, and a play and epic poem in one.

One of Rachmaninoff’s most popular pieces, the Second Symphony is an indulgently melancholic and sentimental work: a magic box of the late-Romantic orchestra. Dramatic sections played by the full orchestra contrast heart-breaking swells that only this composer could have written. The LSO has a long history with the Second Symphony, recording it many times with conductors such as André Previn, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Valery Gergiev. For this recording, which was captured during the opening of the London Symphony Orchestra’s 2019/20 season at the Barbican Hall, Sir Simon Rattle conducted from memory, performing the uncut version of this symphonic treasure.

This album follows up Krystian Zimerman and Sir Simon Rattle’s award winning DG recording of Brahm’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Lutosławski’s Piano Concerto, written in 1988, is dedicated to Krystian Zimerman and was presented by him the first time to audiences in Salzburg in the same year.

The piece features extremely virtuosic demands, its dense pianistic gestures at times recall the piano concertos of Bartók and Prokofiev. The Symphony No. 2, created with techniques of “limited aleatoricism” (Lutosławski), fascinates with its orchestral surfaces that offer an insight into their creator’s ability to organize sounds in a very precise way and their iridescent and colorful vitality.

For her debut concerto album, violinist Veronika Eberle revisits a work that has endured more than two centuries, and shares a fresh interpretation featuring new cadenzas by composer Jörg Widmann.

Not only is Beethoven’s Violin Concerto a particular favourite of Veronika, it has been central to her career to date—most notably alongside Sir Simon Rattle, who has been Veronika’s long-time supporter and collaborator. When she was just 16, Sir Simon introduced her at the 2006 Salzburg Easter Festival, where she performed this very concerto to a packed Salzburg Festpielhaus.

On this album, the pair reunite to bring this sublime masterpiece to life, and to celebrate the work that first brought Veronika to international attention.

From the included liner notes by Sir Simon Rattle:

I have always felt that Haydn is our greatest neglected composer. His life’s work, staggering in its variety and quantity, is a gold mine of invention, intelligence, humour and profound deep feeling. The depths are all the more affecting for being glimpsed rather than openly displayed, as if the music knows that it is enough to discern the shadow to realise that darkness lies beyond.

Could any composer be a better dinner companion? I doubt it. For all of us, it has been an immense privilege to work so closely on these works written in a short space of time, but so utterly different from each other.

Just a word concerning the extraordinary finale of No.90: not many jokes have punchlines that still work after more than 200 years, but this written-in false ending (heard twice because of the repeat) never fails to catch out the audience. The audience reaction, when it realises that it has been fooled not once but twice, are part and parcel of the music, almost an organic necessity. However, we have also provided the possibility of hearing the finale without audience reactions for those who would enjoy being fooled for themselves. But I do believe that, unlike coughing and delinquent mobile phones, these audience sounds are written in to the score, even if invisibly. And I’m sure that if Haydn was writing symphonies today, that one would have a mobile phone in the instrumentation…

I hope that these symphonies give you at least some part of the joy that we have had in performing them.
