Das verlangte Orchester ist groß, zur üblichen Besetzung mit dreifachem Holz kommt ein Altsaxophon (einer der wenigen Fälle eines Saxophons in der klassischen Musik), stark erweitertes Schlagwerk (3 Pauken, Tamburin, Triangel, Kleine und Große Trommel, Becken, Tamtam, Glockenspiel, 3 Glocken), Klavier und eine Harfe. Das Werk gilt in der Orchesterliteratur als anspruchsvoll zu spielen. Es ist dem Philadelphia Orchestra und seinem damaligen Chefdirigenten Eugene Ormandy gewidmet, die das Werk auch am 3. Januar 1941 uraufführten. Erst während einer Aufführung unter Dimitri Mitropoulos und dem Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra im November 1942 entdeckte Rachmaninow, dass in der Partitur des ersten Satzes statt Allegro ein Non Allegro gedruckt war; das Non wurde ausgestrichen. Bis heute findet sich Non Allegro aber häufig noch als Satzangabe. Die Aufführungsdauer des Satzes variiert nicht zuletzt daher beträchtlich zwischen einzelnen Aufführungen. Eine eigene Aufnahme, die Rachmaninows Sicht dargestellt hätte, war geplant, wurde aber nie durchgeführt. 2018 erschien ein Mitschnitt bei Marston Records, in dem Rachmaninow Eugene Ormandy in einer Version für Solo-Klavier das Werk erläutert. Das Tempo zu Beginn des ersten Satzes ist in dieser Erläuterung am Klavier mit 116 Schlägen minimal unter Allegro im oberen Moderato-Bereich.

Since we were on the subject of Everest and Sir Eugene Goosens, I wanted to bring another early Everest recording to your attention. This was Everest’s forth release from 1958, and like it’s Corroborree by the same forces, it is a sonic spectacular. In fact the engineers were so pleased with the awesome dynamic range captured on the tape, that a highly unusual decision was made. Rather than limit the dynamics, as they would have to be compressed to fit on a single disc, it was decided to spread the work over three sides, allowing the earth shatteing dynamic range that was present on the master tape to be fully realized on disc. The Rachmaninoff “Symphonic Dances” was selected for Side Four, filling out this two record set. Recommended!

Few works in the entire literature of orchestral music can match Scheherazade for brilliance, appeal or vividness of instrumental coloring. But then, few composers have possessed the wizardry to orchestrate music as did Rimsky-Korsakov. And until now, it has been difficult to reproduce the full spectrum of the composer’s palette on records. State-of-the-art audio reproduction at the beginning of the 21st century may be the finest ever achieved, but the increasing reissues of historic audiophile recordings provide ample evidence that the search for spectacular sound has been going on for many years. In 1960, Eugene Goossens and the London Symphony Orchestra recorded Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps on 35mm three-track magnetic film, and the quality of the recording is so close-up and realistic that the term “almost palpable” is not an exaggeration. Using 35mm film had several advantages, insofar as it accommodated three times the space of standard quarter-inch recording tape, its thickness allowed the recording of higher sound intensity without printing through to other parts of the film, and the sprocket holes along its sides permitted smooth playback with minimal wow or flutter. Because of this innovative recording method, the sound is so immediate and powerful that the listener viscerally feels the impact of the percussion, and the winds and strings are so vibrant that they seem to have physical dimensions. Aside from the slight bending of the bassoon’s opening pitch, which is apparently due to some stretching of the film, the intonation is accurate and the tone is startling in its clarity, and the music is as focused and clean as anything that can be found on a DSD recording or a multichannel hybrid SACD. Because this recording is such a feat of engineering and a feast for the ears, the stereo CD is packaged with a bonus two-sided DVD-10 that allows playback on DVD audio and DVD video players. Highly recommended.
