Sparkle in the Rain is the sixth studio album by Simple Minds, released on 6 February 1984. A breakthrough commercial success for the band, the record peaked at number one in the UK Albums Chart on 18 February 1984, and reached the top 20 in numerous other countries around the world, including New Zealand, Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Norway, and Australia. Receiving mostly positive reviews in the United Kingdom and the United States, Sparkle in the Rain was ultimately certified double platinum in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry, and significantly increased media interest in the band.

Scotland’s Simple Minds get creative and passionate on Sparkle in the Rain, their seventh album released prior to their mid-’80s heyday of heralding the charts. Produced by Steve Lillywhite (U2, Morrissey, XTC, Psychedelic Furs), Sparkle in the Rain marks the band’s best effort thus far, capturing thick seascapes of illustrious lyrical visions. Frontman Jim Kerr’s anthemic love songs are political and personal, and synth-beats throb over Charlie Burchill’s new wave third-chord guitars and swooning basslines. Songs like “Waterfront” and “Book of Brilliant Things” are finely cut tracks with Simple Minds’ signature harking, but the glossy verse behind “Up on the Catwalk” is what’s most appealing. Piano vibes are pinch-hitting and Kerr’s songwriting thrives on celebrity and the falling grace that coincides that. Sparkle in the Rain is a glimpse of what’s to come from Simple Minds. Kerr’s heart-wrenching vocals soar and such emotion only leads to earning a global following. Like U2 did with 1984’s The Unforgettable Fire, Simple Minds will touch hearts by stripping their soul. The process has already begun on Sparkle in the Rain. –MacKenzie Wilson

No new ground is broken on Cry. In fact, Simple Minds’ reliance on glistening synthesizer textures, the band’s most distinguishing characteristic when it broke in the mid-’80s, becomes the only notable detail on the disc. With unmemorable material and the vocals of Jim Kerr showing little interpretive or technical advancement, each track hangs heavily on the keyboards, which become so dominant that some guitar parts merely imitate electronic effects; the tremolo strings on “Sleeping Girl” may as well come from a sample loop. To its credit, Simple Minds has a unique sound; no matter who among the many credited keyboardists is actually playing a given part, it can’t be mistaken for the product of any other band (with the exception of the last track, Vince Clarke’s “The Floating World,” whose galloping rhythm nods obviously toward Erasure). But when sheen takes precedence over substance, and particularly when that sheen has gleamed for nearly 30 years, that says something about what’s been missing from the hearts of Simple Minds.

A few notes are enough to recognize Simple Minds, and thus rediscover their brand. The echo, the lyricism, the mystic rhythmic, the muddled guitars, the choruses calibrated for the stadiums and above all Jim Kerr’s possessed voice: nothing is lacking on this 18th studio album. Forty years after starting their formation which peaked at the top of the charts during the 80s, the Scots don’t try to reinvent themselves here, but rather to rekindle a flame that shone during the last century and that they adapt quite well to 2018. With the help of a sober production, Simple Minds manages to reflect the times without sounding off track. It’s worth noting that this Walk Between Worlds is also the first album of the band since 2002 without drummer Mel Gaynor and keyboardist Andy Gillespie.

One of Scotland’s finest imports, Simple Minds deliver a strong synth-reared release on New Gold Dream. This album harks the darker side of the band’s musicianship, and such material alludes to their forthcoming pop-stadium sound which hurled them into rock mainstream during the latter part of the ’80s. They were still honing their artistic rowdiness, and Kerr’s pursuing vocals were still hiding. But Simple Minds’ skill of tapping into internal emotion is profound on songs such as “Someone, Somewhere in Summertime” and the album’s title track. But the dance-oriented tracks like “Promised You a Miracle” and “Glittering Prize” are lushly layered in deep electronic beats — it was only a matter of time for Simple Minds to expound upon such musical creativity which made them a household favorite through the 1980s.
