More than three decades on from the release of Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow is as relevant as ever. Earlier this year, boygenius won a Grammy for their Sheryl-referencing “Not Strong Enough.” Olivia Rodrigo helped induct Crow into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, and you can hear the latter’s influence in the work of Soccer Mommy, Snail Mail, Waxahatchee, Haim, Blondshell and Bethany Cosentino, all of whom have covered her songs in concert.

Since her dense, varied, postmodernist eponymous second album illustrated that Sheryl Crow was no one-album wonder, she wasn’t left with as much to prove the third time around. Having created an original variation on roots rock with Sheryl Crow, she was left with the dilemma of how to remain loyal to that sound without repeating herself on her third album, The Globe Sessions. To her credit, she never plays lazy, not when she’s turning out Stonesy rockers (“There Goes the Neighborhood”) or when she’s covering Dylan (the remarkable “Mississippi,” an outtake from Time Out of Mind). However, she has decided to abandon the layered, yard-sale production and pop culture fixations that made Sheryl Crow a defining album of the mid-’90s. The Globe Sessions, instead, is the work of a craftswoman, one who knows how to balance introspective songs with pop/rockers, one who knows how to exploit her signature sound while becoming slightly more eclectic. In that sense, the album is a lot like a latter-day album from her idols, the Stones — it finds pleasures within the craft and the signature sounds themselves. That means that there are no surprises (apart from the synthesized handclaps, of course). The Celtic homage “Riverwide” may be new, but it’s not unexpected, much like how the whiplash transition in “Am I Getting Through” isn’t entirely out of the blue. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though, since The Globe Sessions has a strong set of songs. Since it lacks the varied sonics, humor, and flat-out weirdness of Sheryl Crow, it’s never quite as compelling a listen as its predecessor, yet it is a strong record, again confirming Crow’s position as one of the best roots rockers of the ’90s.

That’s a hell of a list. With such famous friends, Sheryl Crow has turned Threads into an incredibly impressive collaborative album. The 5-star casting is wonderfully eclectic. From Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones to Public Enemy’s Chuck D., Willie Nelson, St. Vincent, Sting, Emmylou Harris, Lucius, Mavis Staples, Stevie Nicks, James Taylor, Jason Isbell and even her ex, Eric Clapton, the American singer crosses over stylistic and generational boundaries, highlighting her own colourful musical identity. Over the course of her ten previous albums, Sheryl Crow has slalomed between rock’n’roll, pop, country, blues and soul, never settling down in one genre. Such is the case again on Threads, even if the general atmosphere remains rooted in a rather classical rock’n’roll. When she topped the charts in the early 90s, this classicism already stood out next to her contemporaries such as Nirvana, Beck and The Smashing Pumpkins… Crow composed the bulk of the songs on this record, as well as adding some exceptionally tasty covers to the mix (George Harrison’s Beware of Darkness, Bob Dylan’s Everything is Broken, The Worst by the Rolling Stones, Kris Kristofferson’s Border Lord). Her prose on this record is more introspective than ever, taking on an almost confessional tone. Perhaps something to do with her recent shocking statement: Threads will be her last record! While we wait to find out if she will ever reconsider, Sheryl Crow signs her densest work at the age of 57.  – Max Dembo

Live From the Artists Den S07E02 Sheryl Crow 1080i HDTV DD5.1 MPEG2-TrollHD

On the eve of the release of her new album, Feels Like Home, nine-time Grammy winner Sheryl Crow delivered a powerhouse performance in the ornate Grand Ballroom of The Plaza. In a taping for an episode of Live from the Artists Den, Crow tore through eighteen songs at the New York City landmark, leading her six-piece band in a career-spanning set that ran from her breakthrough hit, “All I Wanna Do,” right up to her new single, “Callin’ Me When I’m Lonely.” Whether seated for a three-song acoustic set or blowing an electrifying, rocked-up harmonica solo, Crow thrilled the invited audience of 600. The episode will air on public television in early 2014.

Since the release of her first album in 1993, Sheryl Crow has become one of the most popular and critically-acclaimed artists of the last twenty years. Born in Missouri, Crow got her start as a backing vocalist for Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Don Henley before the release of her breakout debut album, Tuesday Night Music Club. The album garnered Crow three of her nine total Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, while such singles as “All I Wanna Do” topped radio charts. Subsequent releases produced more hits, including “Everyday Is A Winding Road” from her 1996 self-titled follow-up album, “My Favorite Mistake” from 1998′s The Globe Sessions, the duet “Picture” with Kid Rock, and “Soak Up The Sun” from 2002′s C’mon C’mon. On September 10, 2013, Crow released her eighth studio album, Feels Like Home. The album shot into the Top Ten of both the Billboard 100 and Country Albums charts and produced Crow’s first Top 20 single in the country format, “Easy.”

The Plaza is one of the most celebrated hotels in the world and a designated National Historic Landmark. Designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the French Renaissance chateau-style building opened in 1907 on the southern border of Central Park, and originally served as a residence for wealthy New Yorkers. Since its inception, the Plaza has been the site of numerous historic meetings and events. In 1964, the Beatles stayed at the hotel during the band’s first visit to the United States, and in 1966 Truman Capote hosted his famous Black and White Ball there. From appearing in some of the most beloved works of fiction of the past century – including F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby and Kay Thompson’s series of Eloise children’s books – to such classic films as Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest, the Plaza has cemented its place as an icon of New York City.
