Richard Wagner’s bicentennial year has yielded fresh performances of his music dramas, as well as some explorations of his non-operatic vocal & orchestral music. Somewhat surpisingly, though, the piano has figured significantly among releases in 2013: 2 recordings of Wagner’s complete works for piano have appeared on the Brilliant & Dynamic labels, & they have been followed by this MDG album of keyboard transcriptions by various hands. Notably excluded are any transcriptions or paraphrases by Franz Liszt, which are so famous that they would warrant a separate album by themselves, & including them would have overwhelmed the competition here. Instead, pianist Severin von Eckardstein has programmed less familiar arrangements that are almost never heard anymore, or so new that they haven’t achieved wide recognition. In the former category are Louis Brassin’s splashy treatment of selections from Das Ring der Nibelungen, Ferruccio Busoni’s elaboration of Siegfried’s Funeral Music from Gцtterdдmmerung, August Stradel’s transcriptions of the Transformation Scene & Good Friday Spell from Parsifal, & Moritz Moszkowski’s version of Isolde’s Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde. The 2 modern selections are Sydney Corbett’s freely atonal Grabmal Kundry In Memoriam Hans Werner Henze, & Zoltбn Kocsis’ faithful adaptation of the Prelude to Tristan & Isolde. Eckardstein’s skills are equal to the enormous demands of the music, which are sometimes as virtuosic as anything Liszt produced, though his expressive powers hold the listener’s attention & make the album work at an artistic level. As flashy as keyboard arrangements can be, Eckardstein finds the lyricism, drama, & pathos in Wagner’s music, underneath all the scales & embellishments, & delivers impressively musical performances throughout.

“The starting point was Beethoven’s Sonata op. 111, but this little piece ‘Vers la flamme’ by Scriabin exemplifies an idea, and the title is ideal for the whole album. The idea is a journey from the earthly to the light, it is about the question of how life and death are connected. Now you can say that it is generally a function of music that it catapults you into a new level of consciousness. But I think the four works on this album do that in a special way, they radiate a tremendous power. They reflect different personal worlds, were written at different times and spring from different genres and sound ideas, yet they all have a similar function.

A formidable interpreter of the works of Robert Schumann, the German pianist Severin von Eckardstein here offers an intense version of rare narrative force of one of the most complex cycles of the 19th century, the Davidsbündlertänze Op. 6. This dazzling kaleidoscope of moods is embedded with works by Chopin and Tchaikovsky, of particularly passionate resonance. Great musical moments that confirm Severin von Eckardstein’s status as one of the most poetic musicians in the world of the piano.

“Young violinist Franziska Hölscher presents her debut album Sequenza on CAvi. In Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 2 Franziska Hölscher and the pianist Severin von Eckardstein prove to be a well-rehearsed duo that knows how to perform Schumann’s music with a lively, communicative and often very intimist playing. This is a highly interesting and above all very honest interpretation of this sonata. Inspired and inspiring performances of works by Heinrich Ignaz Biber, Salvatore Sciarrino and Luciano Berio complete the program. Hölscher’s playing technique is outstanding. Every note, every phrasing arises from a deep and very natural understanding of the music.”
