Sebastian Bohren plays concertos of Mendelssohn, Schubert, Respighi, and Hartmann Mendelssohn’s long-forgotten “little” violin concerto, presented in con- cert for the first time in 1952 by Yehudi Menuhin, was composed in 1822 – a year when the thirteen-year-old would write a total of twelve works. The young Mendelssohn is remarkable not only for his prodigious talent, but also for his extraordinary eagerness to learn. Eduard Devrient, the man of the theater who heard him play at his parents’ home, offers a vi- vid description of his humility: “We quickly noticed that the boy had very little personal vanity, and that his desire to learn, experience, try things out, and make progress for its own sake was most important to him by far.”

After the go-ahead of his recording of the complete Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin by Bach, Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren now presents a unique combination of masterpieces for violin and orchestra. Besides the famous Violin Concerto in E minor by Mendelssohn (one of the most famous violin concertos par excellence), Sebastian has recorded Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto, Op. 15. This work was written from 1938 to 1939 and dedicated to Henry Boys, Britten had to simplify the solo part for it’s dedicatee, but later restored it’s technical pyrotechnics. The program is completed by Tchaikovsky’s “Sérénade Mélancolique”, It was the composer’s first work for violin and orchestra, and was written immediately after completing the Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor.

The cover of this album isn’t the clearest but at least the title – Distant Light – is well-chosen. The most legible name is that of Sebastian Bohren – the name of the violinist. The two composers – the Latvian Pēteris Vasks (born a Soviet citizen in 1946) and the Georgian (born a Soviet citizen in 1933), whose names are hardly visible, offer works for violin and orchestra. One of the orchestras, the Georgisches Kammerorchester Ingolstadt, deserves closer attention: it was a wholly “exiled” orchestra – founded in 1964 in Tblisi, it wound up with gear and luggage in Germany in 1990, and set up camp in Ingolstadt, about a hundred kilometres north of Munich. Today, the great majority of the musicians still come from Georgia, or at least from Eastern Europe. Kancheli, like Vasks, has long been working on tonality: Tāla Gaisma – the Distant light in question, a winning and deep work by Vasks (1997) has won him several international prizes; Vox Amoris is a broad field of most intriguing bursts of instrumental brilliance. On the other hand, Chiaroscuro by Kancheli represents, it must be said, something of a neo-soppy, cinematic tendency found among some composers in the post-Soviet world. Note that Kancheli has indeed put his name to a large number of scores for the cinema…

Swiss violinist Sebastian Bohren and his recording of the complete Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo by Johann Sebastian Bach. On volume I the following works have been recorded: Partitas Nos. 2 and 3 in D minor / E Major, Violin Sonata No. 2 in A Minor. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas have an iconic status in the violin repertoire. Yet, little is known about the background of these fascinating works. Bach’s autograph manuscript is dated in Köthen in 1720, and it is commonly considered as the year when the cycle was completed. In his booklet notes Sebastian Bohren offers new perspectives of these masterpieces. Sebastian Bohren is considered one of the world’s most promising young violinists and maintains an extensive performing schedule.

Rauchenecker, a versatile virtuoso. Although almost completely forgotten today, Georg Wilhelm Rauchenecker was an exceptionally versatile musician of European stature: as founder and conductor of the first professional orchestra of the city of Winterthur (1875), composer, ardent Wagnerian, city organist, music dealer and pedagogue, he left weighty and far-reaching traces in Germany, Switzerland and France.

A singular combination of Beethoven’s only violin concerto (most recently recorded for SONY by Lisa Batiashvili in 2007) with Schumann’s “Fantasy For Violin & Orchestra” Op. 131. The Fantasy was lauded at its premiere but today it is rarely seen on concert programs. In a letter dated June 2nd, 1853 and accompanied by a score of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto – the link to our recording -, Joachim requested Schumann to write a Fantasy for the violin. A few months later in September, within a few short days, Schumann had sketched the Fantasy and sent it to Joachim for review. Joachim performed the Fantasy at the Schumann’s home on September 28th and premiered it in Düsseldorf on October 27th with the orchestra under the baton of Schumann himself. The following year, on January 21st, Joachim performed the Fantasy again. On the same program, Schumann’s wife Clara also performed Beethoven’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major. It would be the last time Schumann heard both of them perform.

This album is an affectionate homage – to Ida Haendel, one of Sebastian Bohren’s heroes; to fiddlers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries; and to the violin itself. The Swiss violinist says, “it is also like a hall of mirrors, as some tracks invoke the spirits of two or three violinists”.

From an early age, Sebastian Bohren was immersed in a lineage of violinists who favoured Romantic transcriptions of Baroque repertoire, studying with a pupil of the great Ukranian-born violinist Nathan Milstein. Later in life, he fell under the influence of violinist Ida Haendel on YouTube, watching her perform Corelli’s “La Folia” Variations. “She played this amazing virtuoso cadenza, and I was captivated”. So arose the concept of a programme reflecting the ethos of “La Folia”, the ear-catching theme which has fascinated composers for centuries, from the Baroque era’s Tomaso Antonio Vitali and Giuseppe Tartini to latter-day Ottorino Respighi and Fritz Kreisler.

Sebastian captures the sound world with sincerity, playing on two different violins, the 1710 “King George” Stradivarius, and a Guadagnini made in 1761.
