This album was recorded in the ancient Palazzo di Scoto di Semifonte in Certaldo Alto (FI). For this recording Giulio Cesare Ricci used the legendary original Neumann U47, U48 and M49 tube microphones. The mastering was made using the entirely analog and valve Signoricci system. The master was realized with the Ampex ATR 102, 2 tracks, 1/2 inch, 30ips. “As no editing has been made, all the tracks on this record are heard as they were performed”. The program chosen for this album is particularly refined and this makes it attractive. Alongside standards that fall within Scott Hamilton’s more usual and familiar repertoire, the American saxophonist has thought of pieces that are more unusual for him but congenial to the duo (Scott Hamilton sax, Paolo Birro piano) who interpret them in a heartfelt and inspired way.In fact, we find a rarely heard ballad like “If I’m Lucky”, masterpieces from musicals like “That’s Entertainment” (from “The Band Wagon” of 1953) and “You’re Gonna Hear From Me” of 1965 written by the well-known recently deceased pianist and conductor André Previn. Finally, two pieces by great instrumentalists/composers in the history of jazz, “Day Dream” by Billy Strayhorn and “Funkallero” by Bill Evans. An album not to be missed!

In the fourth decade of a jazz career in which he has always made a subtle art sound easy, US saxophonist still caresses old standards with the same urbane ecstasy he always has. In its hip-hop or contemporary-classical borrowings, free-improv extremes or north European minimalist whisperings, jazz is now a very different music to the sleek, swinging one Hamilton absorbed from his dad’s records as a boy. But nobody can accuse Hamilton of living in the past: it would be like telling someone they shouldn’t still be in love with a fascinating old partner.

While big bands seemed to be fading fast during the late ’50s and early ’60s, bandleader Si Zentner was one of the few to front a successful big band – enjoying both critical and commercial acclaim.

Two highly accomplished musicians playing in a historic venue! For once, it is the place to determine the release and success of a record. The place is an ancient residential palace in the heart of Tuscany, a family property turned into a hotel which has become over the last years a meeting place for artists and musicians. The meeting in this case was between Scott Hamilton, Andrea Pozza, Giulio Cesare and Alfred Kramer on the occasion of a concert of the two musicians held in the music room of the historic venue.

The magic of music and location together has fascinated Giulio Cesare and just a few months later, they were back to the scene of the crime and what you are holding in your hands is the result. Brazilian poet Vinicius de Moraes wrote “a vida é a arte do encontro (life is the art of meeting), but certainly without humans meeting no artform could survive.

Scott Hamilton is a jazz tenor saxophonist associated with swing and mainstream jazz. Hamilton emerged in the 1970s and at the time was considered to be one of the few musicians of real talent who carried the tradition of the classic jazz tenor saxophone in the style of Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins as well as Zoot Sims and Don Byas forward. Hamilton has recorded more than 40 albums as a lead.

Jazz pianist Andrea Pozza made his debut at age 13 in the historic jazz club, Genoa. His career spans more than 30 years, has led him to perform in Italy and abroad with real “superstars” of the likes of Harry “Sweet” Edison, Bobby Durham, Chet Baker, Al Grey Scott Hamilton, George Coleman, Charlie Mariano, Lee Konitz, Sal Nistico, Massimo Urbani, Luciano Milanese and many others.

Saxophone heavyweight Scott Hamilton wanted to make an album that would stand up to the best of them and he wanted to do it the right way. To do this he choose some of his favorite ballads and played the songs live in studio with a large string section, with no overdubs or laid-in tracks. This album was arranged and conducted by Alan Broadbent. The record was recorded in Hollywood on October 5 & 6, 1992.

Since the 1970s Scott Hamilton has kept alive old school swing mainstream tenor sax. He created a stir back then since he was only in his mid-20s at that time, and fusion jazz was hot then. A young tenor with a muscular tone like Ben Webster certainly stood out. Today Harry Allen has inherited a similar reputation and he and Scott sometime play together. So much for old moldy figs…

Starting in the late ’50s, Gerry Mulligan recorded a series of encounters with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. In 1986 he resumed the practice for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of the young great Scott Hamilton. The music, which includes warm ballads and fairly hot romps (five of the seven songs are Mulligan originals), consistently swing and are quite enjoyable.

This album is part of recordings I made on the occasion of concerts of the fonè Music Festival Piaggio edition 2021. I realized this recording at the Auditorium Piaggio located inside the famous Museum in Pontedera, the place where Piaggio was born and where it still continues to produce today. Inside the Museum every year the public from all over the world can admire the Piaggio production made over the years, all the models of the Vespe and Ape, all the Aprilia, Gilera and Moto Guzzi motorcycles that have won national and international awards over time. For this recording I brought all my equipment both analog (Ampex ATR 102 Electronic Tube Ampex Model 351-1965, 2 tracks, 1/2 inch, 30ips modified by David Manley) and digital (Pyramix Recorder, dCS A/D and D/A converters). As for microphones I used my original collection of Neumann U47, U48, M49 in addition to the mike pre-amplifier and Signoricci cables. A state-of-the-art recording with no sound manipulation, no equalization, no reverb, no compression and pansion … but natural sound with true timbre to best enhance the acoustics of the Auditorium of the Piaggio Museum. Also for this recording I used a “field effect” recording technique… all this to bring the listener to live again in his home hifi system, the live effect as if he were present at the performance. In this album protagonists are Scott Hamilton, one of the greatest mainstream in the world, in the company of three great jazz players Paolo Birro, Aldo Zunino and Alfred Kramer, his usual partners when he performs in Italy. Among the songs played to highlight Poinciana (Nat Simon) that gives the title to the album, Birk’s Works (Dizzy Gillespie) and Put On A Happy Face (Charles Strouse).
