Founded in 2007, the Schumann Quartett (not to be confused with the Schumann Quartet made up of Christian Favre, piano, Tedi Papavrami, violin, Dorin Matea, viola and François Guye, cello) first studied with the Alban Berg Quartet, and then in Madrid with Günter Pichler. It’s a story of three brothers, Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann who were born in Cologne to German, Romanian and Japanese parents, and who were joined by viola player Liisa Randalu. The career of this young ensemble got off to a flying start after they took first prize at the Bordeaux international string quartet competition. Taking full advantage of the esteem of great old artists, they also play chamber music with Menahem Pressler and Sabine Meyer.

“Landscapes” is a journey in sound to the roots of the Schumann Quartet, a foursome made up of the three brothers Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann and the viola player Liisa Randalu. Four very different works contribute their personal stories to form a magical whole. At the album’s hub is Arvo Pärt’s composition “Fratres”, meaning “brothers”. The Schumann Quartet rehearsed the work with Pärt in Viimsi in Estonia and recorded it there. The personal contact with the composer came through Pärt’s Estonian compatriot Liisa Randalu.

After issuing three successful concept albums since 2017, of which the most recent, “Chiaroscuro”, has just been nominated for an Opus Klassik award, the Schumann Quartet has chosen three string quartets by Franz Schubert for its new album, “Fragment”. The recording on the Berlin Classics label in collaboration with the German public broadcaster SWR 2 will be issued on 14 August, 2020, in digital form and on CD. The string quartet “Rosamunde – Fragment Pt. 1” and “String Quartet No. 6 D74 – Pt. 2” are already available as an EP at popular download and streaming sites.

We are standing in a picture gallery of music. All around us we can hear snippets of the great works for string quartets, along with unfamiliar things to delight the ear; it is truly a music-lover’s paradise. “Chiaroscuro” forms the conclusion of a rather special trilogy of albums by the Schumann Quartet and at the same time marks a journey’s end. After the quartet searched their own roots with their first album “Landscapes” and engaged with their namesake Robert Schumann on the follow-up album “Intermezzo”, they are now completing their journey with the new album “Chiaroscuro”. As of today there is a second foretaste of the upcoming album: Shostakovich’s “Elegy” from string quartet 15. The piece can be heard from today on all common platforms.
