Sarah Vaughan recorded in a variety of settings while with Mercury and EmArcy in the 1950s, but this particular matchup with the Count Basie Orchestra (pianist Ronnell Bright substitutes for Count, thus the title) is pure jazz. During the classic encounter, Vaughan fits in comfortably with the band, whether singing lyrics (such as “Darn That Dream,” “Cheek to Cheek,” or “Doodlin'”) or scatting sensuously on “No Count Blues.” The wit and constant swing (in addition to the spontaneous creativity), makes this one of the best of all Sarah Vaughan recordings. “[Vaughan] deliver[s] a nuanced, intimate performance on this live gig. Recorded in August 1957, this date features pianist Jimmy Jones, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes … The show, of course, belongs to Sassy. She swoops, soars, whispers, and belts it out. Her range is jaw dropping; her control and vibrato are simply beyond compare. And although Vaughan asks for her mic to be turned up throughout the performance, she is mixed up front and quite high in the recording–right where she deserves to be.”

At Mister Kelly’s is a 1957 live album by American jazz singer Sarah Vaughan, recorded at Mister Kelly’s jazz club in Chicago.

Possessor of one of the most wondrous voices of the 20th century, Sarah Vaughan ranked with Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday in the very top echelon of female jazz singers. She often gave the impression that with her wide range, perfectly controlled vibrato, and wide expressive abilities, she could do anything she wanted with her voice. Although not all of her many recordings are essential (give Vaughan a weak song and she might strangle it to death), Sarah Vaughan’s legacy as a performer and a recording artist will be very difficult to match in the future.

In 1938, with the institution of legal deposit for phonograms, these contributions became systematic; to this very day, they constitute the collection’s main growth vector, forming a one-of-a-kind national heritage. This legal deposit is further complemented by donations and acquisitions.
