This is my favorite kind of trio playing – the inimitable and distinctive personal and collective sound of Ray Gallon, Ron Carter and Lewis Nash has transparency and clarity, where every note and gesture mean something. Ray Gallon’s music is informed, passionate, and personal. He possesses a unique rhythmic imagination and a wrought iron vocabulary. Grand Company is a milestone.

Brazilian singer Rosa Passos meets legendary jazz bassist, Ron Carter. You will now have a front row seat right by Carter’s big, woody acoustic bass violin, as he uses his singing sound, big percussive beat and canny harmonic sensibility to complement the bossa nova artistry of the inimatble Rosa Passos.

This live recording of straight ahead jazz features the great Ron Carter on bass, Donald Vega on piano and Russell Malone on guitar. The three of them are smack dab right in front of you with the bass dead center, the piano panned to the left and guitar to the right. Excellent playing and a ton of fun.

Ron Carter served as sideman on so many Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams sessions, and now he brings his stalwart colleagues out on his own date. The results are everything you would expect from this stellar trio. Hancock and Williams were coming off a period in their careers during which they had focused on building a crossover audience with fusion music. But here they are back in a mainstream attitude, and you can sense the sheer fun of their music-making. A great track, and the whole Third Plane album stands out as one of the best trio recordings from a decade marked by outstanding threesomes.

„This reunion of Miles Davis’ mid-’60s rhythm section (bassist Ron Carter, pianist Herbie Hancock, and drummer Tony Williams) has its moments but is not particularly memorable. Performing three of Carter’s songs, one apiece from Hancock and Williams, and the standard “Stella by Starlight,” the solos are fine, but on the whole, little special occurs; the magic is missing.“ –Scott Yanow

Ron Carter is one of the most recorded bassists in jazz. In his mid-seventies at the time of these sessions, he is very much still at the top of his game as he leads the first big-band date of his own, with potent arrangements by conductor Robert M. Freedman and including some of New York’s busiest musicians, including Jerry Dodgion, Steve Wilson, Wayne Escoffery, and Scott Robinson in the woodwind section, brass players Steve Davis, Douglas Purviance, and Greg Gisbert, plus pianist Mulgrew Miller and drummer Lewis Nash, among others. Freedman’s charts are short and sweet, all of them under five minutes, with much of the focus on imaginative writing and Carter’s melodic bass central in the mix. The material spans from the 1920s to the present, played with imagination. The opening “Caravan” is taken far from its roots, transformed into a breezy bop vehicle, even slipping in a dissonant snippet of “Hot House.” The setting of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Con Alma” retains its Latin flavor, with a lush introduction by the brass and reeds and strong solos by Miller and Carter. Carter’s inventive bass provides the undercurrent for the brisk interpretation of Wayne Shorter’s marvelous jazz standard “Footprints,” while the upbeat performance of Gerry Mulligan’s “Line for Lyons” would have pleased its composer. Carter has long been a prolific composer, and his “Loose Change” is a funky affair with marvelous interplay among the brass and reeds, while “Opus 1.5 (Theme for C.B.)” is mellow and somber, with Charles Pillow’s mellow English horn prominent and an intricate solo by Carter. With this delightful big-band date, the veteran bassist continues to surprise and delight listeners during a career spanning five-plus decades. ~~ AllMusic Review by Ken Dryden

Ron Carter, who came to prominence as the bassist for Miles Davis’s second great quintet in the 1960s, made his first date as a leader with 1961’s „Where?“. The band features the great Eric Dolphy on flute, saxophone, and bass clarinet, drummer Charlie Persip, pianist Mal Waldron, and bassist George Duvivier (who engages in occasional dialogue with Carter’s cello).

The strings vibrate gently. Accurate tone, unconditionally clear. And quietly. The longest fingers of jazz seem to dance weightlessly along the wooden bridge; yearning, filigree and elegant. No one else sounds like Ron Carter. His double bass often produces a crisp groove like an electric bass, yet it is always clearly definable as the sound of a classical music instrument. Then the sound under the scorpion-like hands irresistibly swells. Payton Crossley gently caresses the cymbal, and Jimmy Green, the ”new member” on the tenor saxophone as well as pianist Renee Rosnes push the chorus onto the finely crocheted rhythm cover. ”With us, nobody knows exactly what happens when,” Carter praised the Foursight Quartet’s unique selling point. ”This is precisely why every concert is a real challenge. We almost always play 35 to 40 minutes without a stop at the beginning. No breaks, just slight changes that show the beginning of a new song. If we were a classical music band, it would be called a symphony with five movements. This kind of thing only works with this band!”

Rosa Passos made her recording debut as a leader in 1979, but this 2003 Chesky release may be her first to be released outside of South America. The Brazilian singer is paired with veteran bassist Ron Carter, who provides a solid melodic foundation for her throughout the date; the delightful Brazilian guitarist Lula Galvao; percussionist Paulo Braga, and, on a few tracks, veteran session musician Billy Drewes on tenor sax or clarinet. While the focus is clearly on the soft, effective vocals of Passos, who is extremely effective in her interpretations of bossa nova classics such as “Insensatez,” “Desafinado,” “Caminhos Cruzados,” and “O Grande Amor,” Carter’s solos are also subtly swinging. Not satisfied with sticking exclusively to a well known repertoire, Passos is a superb interpreter of less familiar songs like Jobim’s “Por Causa de Voce” (a duet with Carter, whose playing is phenomenal on this track) and the lively “Feitio de Oracao.” The warm, very intimate sound throughout this studio date makes this a particularly memorable bossa nova release.

One of the massive Ron Carter albums from the mid 70s – and a set of 4 open-ended modal tracks that hit a similar Latin/but not Latin approach as the tracks on Coltrane’s great Ole album. The group’s a small one – featuring Carter on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Jay Berliner on guitar, Ralph MacDonald on percussion, Roland Hanna on piano, and Hubert Laws on flute. Laws’ playing is some of the best on the record – and his solos carry most of the songs nicely, a lot more nicely, in fact, than those on his own albums at the time. Leon Pendarvis makes a guest appearance playing electric piano on the cut “Arkansas”, which is a bit funky – and other tunes include “El Noche Sol”, “Sabado Sombrero”, and “El Noche Sol”.

80: The number stands there as if chiseled in stone. An age when crossroads are reached. Where is the journey headed? How much time still remains? Some start to reminisce about the past and distinguish the good and the bad years. But it is always one and the same life. When Ron Carter possibly reflects and looks back on his past eight decades on May 4, 2017, then there will hardly be any reason for self-doubts, not even when he is alone and unnoticed.

Joe Henderson is the essence of jazz. He embodies all the elements that came together in his generation: the virtuosity of hard bop and the avantgarde. He can be harmonically abstract and yet keep to the roots. On 1980’s “Mirror, Mirror”, Henderson has gathered a truly all-star group. This album isn’t about a soloist and his sidemen: all the musicians are on an equal footing, everyone has their space to play.
