The Mozarteumorchester Salzburg looks back on a history of more than 180 years. It was founded in 1841 with the involvement of Constanze Mozart. Today it enjoys a worldwide reputation for its lively and purposeful Mozart interpretations. Its permanent guest conductors include Constantinos Carydis, Andrew Manze, and the Spanish conductor and violinist Roberto González-Monjas. They all contribute to the orchestra’s ability to constantly regroup and align itself for the repertoire at hand. Of course, the constant preoccupation with the classical period is part of the formative element, but in the meantime the orchestra is also appreciated for interpretations of the music of the 19th/20th and 21st centuries. Together with the Berlin Classics label, the Mozarteumorchester Salzburg will embark on an exciting journey starting in August 2023. With six album releases planned through 2025, the orchestra will be able to show its full range and passion for playing.

The theme of our 22/23 season, “Werden” (Becoming), is taken directly from Mozart’s splendid Symphony No. 39. This work is associated with concepts such as freemasonry, virtuosity, nature, mystery and enlightenment. But why? Can music really express these ideas, or do we merely randomly associate romantic meanings with it? How can we interpret a manuscript – hastily written in ink on parchment by candlelight in 1788? I warmly invite you to engage with the hidden aspects of this fascinating work.

Both works are classics of children’s concerts that are enjoying the same worldwide success: the musical tale “Pierre and the Wolf” by Prokofiev and “The Carnival of Animals” by Camille Saint-Saëns, which the latter described – probably with a wink – as a “Great zoological fantasy”. Is the main thing so said? Not at all. Because the question arises as to why adults appreciate the story of the brave Peter and the evil wolf as much as children. No doubt it has to do with Prokofiev’s brilliant music. It should also be remembered that Saint-Saëns composed his “Carnaval” for a private concert at home, that is, for adult entertainment. And the latter apparently could not restrain themselves from laughing, so much so that the composer suddenly became frightened and strictly forbade the publication of his charming work, fearing that his serious works would therefore no longer be taken seriously. In a way, he was right: in terms of popularity with young and old, no other work by Saint-Saëns can compete with the “Carnival of Animals”.
