Stop and Smell the Roses is the eighth studio album by English rock musician Ringo Starr. Released in October 1981, it followed the twin commercial failures of Ringo the 4th (1977) and Bad Boy (1978). The album includes the hit single “Wrack My Brain”, written and produced by George Harrison, but otherwise failed to find commercial success. It also includes contributions from Paul McCartney, Harry Nilsson, Ronnie Wood and Stephen Stills.

Ringo Starr’s 18th studio album, Postcards From Paradise, was released on March 31, 2015 on Rockabella Records.

The solo album, with 11 original tracks, is the first to include a song written and recorded by Ringo Starr and his current All Starr Band – Steve Lukather, Todd Rundgren, Gregg Rolie, Richard Page, Warren Ham and Gregg Bissonette. Postcards From Paradise was produced by Ringo and recorded at his home studio in Los Angeles and, as always, features friends and family. As Ringo often says, “If I am recording and you’re in town and drop by, you’re going to be on the record!” The album’s guest artists include: Joe Walsh, Benmont Tench, Dave Stewart, Ann Marie Simpson, Richard Marx, Amy Keys, Peter Frampton, Nathan East, and Glen Ballard (among others, complete details and track by track to follow in coming weeks).

On April 18, 2015 Ringo will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, where he will receive the Award for Musical Excellence.

Produced by Joe Walsh, Old Wave was a well-put-together collection of good pop/rock songs that was all wrong for Ringo Starr. The songs required interpretive abilities simply not found in a singer of Ringo’s pleasant, but limited voice and phrasing. “She’s About a Mover” and “I Keep Forgettin”‘ were appropriate covers, but Ringo was out of his depth on reflective songs like “Picture Show Life” and “As Far as We Can Go.” There was also a throwaway instrumental, “Everybody’s in a Hurry but Me,” featuring Eric Clapton and John Entwistle. Neil Bogart, the head of Boardwalk, Ringo’s record label, died during the making of this album, and the closest it got to an American release was on RCA Canada, which was just as well.

Change The World, recorded at Ringo’s Roccabella West, includes “Let’s Change The World” (Joseph Williams/Steve Lukather) that delivers a welcome dose of hope and optimism, the reggae-infused “Just That Way” (Ringo Starr/Bruce Sugar,) the Country-esque “Coming Undone,” Starr’s first collaboration with Linda Perry who wrote and plays on the track (also with Trombone Shorty,) and Ringo rocks his version of “Rock Around The Clock” revved up by the unmistakable Joe Walsh on guitar.

The second Ringo album in a row to miss the charts completely, 1978’s Bad Boy ranks right up there with George Harrison’s Gone Troppo as the worst album ever released by a member of the Beatles. Produced by schlockmeister Vini Poncia, the clueless nature of record is best summed up by the stiff disco cover of the Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go,” which is actually (and unbelievably) one of Bad Boy’s highlights. The other tracks here barely qualify as filler, although Ringo’s rendition of the old New Orleans soul classic “Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)” does exude some hangdog charm. For the most part, Bad Boy sounds like the work of a man who keeps making records simply because he doesn’t know how to do anything else. Poor Ringo. –Dan Epstein
