Her virtuoso playing can be heard on numerous recordings, ranging from the medieval period to the present day. Richard Egarr began their musical partnership as students together at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, leading to acclaimed duo recitals at the Purcell Room and the Wigmore Hall in London. They have appeared in concert and on disc together on many occasions as their respective careers progressed, but this is the first time that they have recorded together as a duo. This is their second solo album and a second Gramophone ‘Choice’ accolade which was widely acclaimed as a benchmark recording.

Legends of the period-performance community Sarah Cunningham and Richard Egarr need little introduction with their contributions to recorded music garnering critical acclaim from early music afficionados across the decades. They join forces for their AVIE Records debut recording of J.S. Bach’s celebrated Sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord together with Cunningham’s dazzling Organ Trio Sonata and Flute Partita arrangements to conclude the programme. The Gamba Sonatas have long-established themselves as a staple in the cello/gamba repertoire, notably extending their fame into popular culture with the Adagio from Sonata No. 3 featuring (alongside with Bach’s solo suites) in Anthony Minghella’s 1990 BAFTA award-winning movie “Truly, Madly, Deeply”, starring Alan Rickman and Juliet Stephenson.

Whatever the elusive truth may be regarding the ‘Englishness’ of these ‘Six Suittes avec leurs Preludes’, there is no denying the imagination of the keyboard writing. Each Suite is headed by a Prelude of substantial proportions, followed by wonderfully varied dance movements, all perfectly suited to showcase the joyful brilliance of Richard Egarr’s harpsichord skill.

Since 1727, JS Bach’s “Great Passion” has gripped the hearts and uplifted the minds of audiences all over the globe. Nearly three centuries after its premiere, the work has lost none of its power to evoke feelings of compassion for all those who suffer. Its mix of urgent story-telling, meditative arias and mighty choruses sets St Matthew’s account of Christ’s betrayal, trial and execution eloquently and emotionally.

Over the past 40 years the AAM has made over 300 recordings of baroque and classical music, winning Brit and Gramophone Awards along the way, however – remarkably – this is our first recording of the St Matthew Passion. With a superlative cast including James Gilchrist, Sarah Connolly, Thomas Hobbs, Elizabeth Watts, Christopher Maltman and Matthew Rose, and directed by Richard Egarr, this is a landmark project.

JS Bach’s St John Passion is an intensely personal experience, bringing to life the humanity of the passion story. Combining raw viscerality with moments of exquisite intimacy, it was written soon after Bach’s arrival as Kantor at Leipzig’s Thomasschule. Keen to impress a new congregation, Bach produced a setting of the age-old passion story which overshadowed almost every piece of liturgical music the world had previously known. Our recording aims to capture the authenticity and vivacity of the very first Good Friday performance at Leipzig’s Nikolaikirche.

Over the past 40 years the AAM has made over 300 recordings of baroque and classical music, winning Brit and Grammy Awards along the way. This is our first-ever recording of the St John Passion. With a superlative cast including James Gilchrist, Sarah Connolly, Andrew Kennedy, Elizabeth Watts, Christopher Purves and Matthew Rose, and directed by Richard Egarr, this is a landmark project.

Announcing AAM Record’s newest release, AAM003 JS Bach Orchestral Suites, available worldwide from 4 November 2014. Bach’s Orchestral Suites are a series of grand and graceful dances, paying homage to the French baroque style as championed by the ballet-obsessed King Louis XIV. Written during Bach’s years in Leipzig, where he had a wider range of instruments at his disposal than ever before, the Suites revel in new sonorous possibilities and employ varied combinations of wind, brass, stringed instruments and timpani.

“The news of the death of Christopher Hogwood comes just as the orchestra he founded, the Academy of Ancient Music, releases a fine new set of Bach’s Orchestral Suites with his successor, Richard Egarr, repeating the one-to-a-part approach he adopted for their Harmonia Mundi Brandenburg set. The sound is consequently less expansive than other recordings but the rewards are glorious, with Egarr at the harpsichord driving the delightfully clean and springy rhythms, every detail sharply defined, each separate timbre there for us to enjoy. This intimate chamber approach allows the trumpets in Suites Nos.3 and 4 to glow rather than blast, and the exceptional flute of Rachel Brown to shine in all its woody-toned charm in Suite No.2. Highly recommended.” –The Observer

The scholarly searchlight of indefatigable Richard Egarr now falls on the Handel Organ concertos. These have been astonishingly popular since their inception around 1733 as interlude entertainment in Handel’s lucrative series of oratorios. They were an immediate success. So much so, that even before Handel and his publisher had produced their first edition, a pirated publication was on sale – “spurious” and “mangled” though Handel considered it.

The world-premiere recording of choral and instrumental music by the long-neglected Christopher Gibbons, second son of the famous Orlando. Featuring the Choir of the AAM (who make their recording debut), this disc surveys the broad expressive palette of a composer who provides the “missing link between the pre-Commonwealth world of William Lawes and the Restoration baroquerie of Henry Purcell”.

Born into an English musical family, organist and composer Christopher Gibbons (1615-1676) probably received early training from his famous father Orlando Gibbons. He sang in the choir of the Chapel Royal and went on to a distinguished career at Westminster Abbey and in the court of Charles II. With this showcase programme of motets, anthems, fantasias for strings, and organ voluntaries (all of which are receiving their first recording), Richard Egarr, the Academy of Ancient Music and the Choir of the AAM, aim to rescue the composer from unjust obscurity.

The Academy of Ancient Music explores a revolutionary period of Italian music through the work of Venetian man of mystery Dario Castello.

Working at the same time as Claudio Monteverdi, Dario Castello wrote innovative and ground-breaking sonatas that had a profound effect on generations of Italian composers. Very little is known about him today, but in the 17th century he was actually more widely published than Shakespeare.

AAM Music Director Richard Egarr is a lifelong advocate of Castello, and on this recording directs the composer’s first book of sonatas from the harpsichord and organ.Taking the form of a small chamber group, the AAM finds itself at its most adventurous and expressive, performing twelve fiercely virtuosic sonatas for violin, cornetto and dulcian that are full of imagination and colour.

This release – the fifth on AAM Records – follows the AAM’s critically-acclaimed series of JS Bach recordings. Their 2015 release of JS Bach’s St Matthew Passion (AAM004) was praised by BBC Music Magazine for Richard Egarr’s “compellingly original vision”, and was awarded BBC Radio 3’s Disc of the Week. JS Bach’s Orchestral Suites (AAM003) was awarded five stars by Fine Music Magazine and was described as “a feast of meaningfully understated musicianship” in an Editor’s Choice review in Gramophone magazine.

The 18th century saw an explosion of symphonies (over 18,000 composed in just 60 years, by one estimate). ‘Birth of the Symphony: Handel to Haydn’ surveys some of the diverse works which were central to the genre as we know it today. The recording begins with Handel’s Sinfonia from Saul, an example of the oratorio sinfonia which supplied models for the early symphony’s scoring. Works from the avant-garde Mannheim composers Stamitz and Richter demonstrate the new sonic possibilities of the form, with which Mozart also engages in his very first attempt at the symphony. The recording ends with an example of a mature classical symphony, Haydn’s ‘La passione’.

At the time of my writing these notes, there lives in England an extraordinary 37-year-old ‘Savant’ who can make huge, complex calculations in his head, recite ‘pi’ to over 21,000 decimal points, and master languages unknown to him (such as Icelandic) in one week. These abilities manifested themselves after a head trauma in his young years. Unusually he displays none of the social difficulties in communication which other more autistic Savants often have. Such extraordinary people maybe give us a glimpse of the true potential of the human brain, that most complex and mysterious organ. I am convinced that Bach’s abilities with music, the manipulation of sound in time and space, were on this superhuman level. Commentators at the time attest to his ability to assess immediately the full potential and possibilities of any given fugue subject. Another frequently mentioned skill was an ability to infuse his music with numerical and mathematical material. These notes will take a look at Bach’s first major publication, his ‘Opus 1’, the six wonderful Partitas, and try to understand and suggest his message to us. The music must be familiar to any serious keyboard player or music lover, so I will restrict myself to a personal reaction to this music. Thereafter I will try to ‘decode’ the bigger and deeper message that lurks beneath these fantastic notes.

Long neglected on a library shelf in Brandenburg Castle, these six ‘Concertos for several instruments’ have since become some of the best-known works in the classical repertoire for their musical inventiveness and their games of mathematical symmetry. Richard Egarr and the Academy of Ancient Music have endeavoured to return to the original ‘chamber’ conception of the works, with one player per part.
