A very important release for me, because it presents – for the first time – Reinhold Friedrich, an excellent soloist, who is supported by congenial partners: Hannes Läubin (trumpet), Gregory Ahss (solo violin), Munich Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Martín Baeza-Rubio. Secondly, there are four special compositions of different character, – the double concerto VIVALDISSIMO with two trumpets chasing each other in a rush of sound, the double concerto ALTAI – TRACES FOR INFINITY with my Far Eastern longing (Central Asia, Siberia, China…) for an archaic world. ) for an archaic world, L’ANGELICA FARFALLA with “my” gems of early music, and finally IKARUS – DESIRE FOR THE LIGHT as an epic pictorial arc on the themes of “near-death experiences” and afterlife research, which have fascinated me for a long time. Thirdly, the “trumpet” was the first instrument of my musical education and still means a familiar timbre to me today.

Trumpet and organ – and yet conceivably far removed from the usual of this popular line-up: that is “O man, pay attention!” – not just an eye-catcher, but program, when the world-class trumpeter Reinhold Friedrich and the Essen cathedral organist Sebastian Küchler-Blessing contemporary works, which as A reaction to the horrors of the Third Reich, placed in dialogue with arrangements of romantic works: in addition to the eponymous slow movement from Mahler’s Third, “Kol Nidrei” by Max Bruch and Brahms’ “O Tod, wie bitter bist Du” can be heard. Zsigmond Szathmáry, who was highly esteemed by György Ligeti, wrote an “…ad memoriam…” about the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin especially for this production. The siblings Kristina Schoch (recorder) and Andre Schoch (trumpeter with the Berlin Philharmonic) also take part in other works – for example in four epigrams based on Hebrew songs for recorder and organ pedal by Freiburg’s Otfried Büsing. Recorded on the Rieger organ in Essen Cathedral, which was rebuilt after the war’s destruction, war is raging on European soil at the same time: Rarely should a “Oh man! Be careful!” may have been more topical.

The recordings for this release were made in the middle of the pandemic under difficult conditions. The hope of the artists involved is to make their contribution so that culture will emerge from this crisis not weakened, but strengthened. “Art is a daughter of freedom, and from the necessity of spirits, not from the necessity of matter, it wants to receive its prescription” (Schiller). Reinhold Friedrich, a prolific performer on major stages around the world, is a professor of trumpet at Karlsruhe, a sought-after lecturer for master classes, honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid and also in Hiroshima. Many of his recordings were awarded international prizes and got high press acclaim.

The production with Reinhold Friedrich, Eriko Takezawa and Alisa Kratzer unites original works for trumpet and piano as well as arrangements for this instrumentation. One can only share Friedrich’s regret that despite numerous, sometimes even exposed orchestral solos, there are no virtuoso solo concertos for trumpet by these composers. Together with the versatile pianist Eriko Takezawa they form a perfectly harmonized duo whose repertoire reaches from Teleman over Gershwin to works by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.
